The Ness of Brodgar is a monumental Neolithic archaeological complex on Orkney’s Brodgar peninsula—not a single, definitively identified temple. The Ness of Brodgar Project dates activity there to approximately 3500–2300 BC, with the complex at its peak around 3100 BC; archaeologists interpret it as a place that may have hosted feasting, exchange, gatherings, and ceremonies.
Britain’s Neil Oliver investigates the site in this documentary. The “temple” label is a popular shorthand: the evidence points to a complex of buildings and activities, while its exact purpose remains open to interpretation.

What is the Ness of Brodgar?
The Ness is an archaeological complex of monumental Neolithic buildings and associated finds, including artwork, pottery, bones, and stone tools. It sits within the wider Heart of Neolithic Orkney landscape, but it is distinct from nearby monuments such as the Ring of Brodgar and the Stones of Stenness.
Modern investigation followed geophysical survey work begun in 2002. A large building was discovered in 2003, and test trenches in 2004 confirmed that an artificial mound covered Neolithic structures and middens. Excavation covered three hectares and ran from 2004 through 2024, according to the Ness of Brodgar Project.

How old is the Ness of Brodgar?
The Ness of Brodgar Project dates activity across the site to approximately 3500–2300 BC and places the monumental complex’s zenith around 3100 BC. These dates describe multiple phases, not the construction date of one temple. The project says field excavation ended in 2024 and has shifted to post-excavation analysis and eventual publication.
Was the Ness of Brodgar really a temple?
“Temple” is not a settled archaeological identification for the whole site. The Ness of Brodgar Project’s synthesis suggests a place of feasting and exchange of ideas and objects, possibly also associated with ceremonies, gatherings, rituals, and celebrations. Those possibilities should not be mistaken for a definitive account of the site’s function.
How does it relate to the Heart of Neolithic Orkney?
The Ness belongs to a wider, visually connected archaeological landscape. UNESCO’s Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage property includes Maeshowe, the Stones of Stenness, the Ring of Brodgar, Skara Brae, and associated sites. UNESCO describes a landscape with ceremonial, funerary, and domestic evidence; it identifies Skara Brae as a settlement, Maeshowe as a chambered tomb, and the Ring of Brodgar and Stones of Stenness as stone circles.
UNESCO inscribed the property in 1999 and says its monuments testify to Neolithic cultural achievements. Its description identifies visitor footfall and coastal erosion as physical threats to the monuments.
