The phrase “the six original Avengers” usually means the founding lineup seen in Marvel Studios’ The Avengers (2012): Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye.
They were not presented as a ready-made team. Nick Fury assembled them in response to Loki’s theft of the Tesseract, and the heroes had to overcome distrust, clashing personalities, and Loki’s manipulation before they truly fought as one. The film opened in cinemas on May 4, 2012, and runs for 143 minutes.
The six original MCU Avengers
| Hero | Real name | Role in the team |
|---|---|---|
| Iron Man | Tony Stark | Engineer, strategist, and aerial heavy weapons specialist |
| Captain America | Steve Rogers | Field leader and super-soldier |
| Thor | Thor Odinson | Asgardian warrior and powerhouse |
| Hulk | Bruce Banner | Scientist and source of overwhelming physical strength |
| Black Widow | Natasha Romanoff | Spy, infiltrator, and intelligence operative |
| Hawkeye | Clint Barton | Elite marksman and S.H.I.E.L.D. field agent |
1. Iron Man — Tony Stark
Tony Stark is a billionaire inventor who turns himself into a superhero through his own engineering. His Iron Man armor gives him flight, enhanced strength, energy projection, advanced sensors, heavy weapons, and protection against gunfire and explosions.
Stark is one of the first people Nick Fury considers for the Avengers Initiative. On the original team, he supplies technical expertise and firepower, but his contribution is not limited to his armor. He is also one of the group’s most important problem-solvers, helping the team understand the Tesseract and identify how Loki’s invasion is operating.

His confidence frequently creates friction with Steve Rogers, whose discipline and military experience lead him to challenge Stark’s impulsiveness. That conflict is part of the team’s early instability, but Stark’s willingness to take enormous risks becomes crucial during the Battle of New York.
2. Captain America — Steve Rogers
Steve Rogers is a World War II soldier transformed by the Super-Soldier Serum. After being lost in the ice and placed in suspended animation, he is discovered and revived in the modern era. Fury recruits him because he combines exceptional physical ability with battlefield leadership and a strong moral code.
Captain America has enhanced strength, speed, endurance, agility, and recovery. His vibranium shield works as both armor and a weapon, allowing him to block attacks, strike opponents, and coordinate with the other Avengers in close combat.
During the Battle of New York, Rogers becomes the team’s practical field commander. He directs emergency responses across the city, organizes the Avengers’ positions, and gives the group a clear objective when the invasion begins. Unlike Stark, he is accustomed to operating within a chain of command, although he soon learns that this team cannot be managed like a conventional military unit.
3. Thor — Thor Odinson
Thor is an Asgardian god, warrior, and son of Odin. He is also Loki’s brother, which makes the conflict personal as well as global. Thor initially confronts the other heroes because he wants to take Loki back to Asgard. His first meeting with Iron Man turns into a fight before Captain America intervenes.

Thor eventually recognizes that Loki’s actions threaten Earth and joins the others. He brings immense strength, durability, centuries of combat experience, and control over lightning. In The Avengers, he wields Mjolnir, his enchanted hammer, which can return to his hand and channel his power.
Thor gives the team its strongest connection to the wider cosmic and mythological side of the MCU. He also provides a direct link to the alien forces behind Loki’s invasion, even though his personal priority remains stopping his adopted brother.
4. Hulk — Bruce Banner
Bruce Banner is a scientist whose exposure to gamma radiation causes him to transform into the Hulk. Because Banner fears losing control, he has spent much of his life trying to avoid attention. Natasha Romanoff travels to India to find him and persuade him to help with the Avengers Initiative.

The Hulk, however, supplies the Avengers with their greatest display of raw physical power. His strength, resilience, and ability to withstand extraordinary punishment make him a decisive weapon against the Chitauri.
For much of the film, Banner treats the transformation as a dangerous condition rather than a reliable ability. By the Battle of New York, he has gained enough control to transform deliberately. His arrival in the battle—followed by his attack on the Chitauri—becomes one of the film’s clearest demonstrations of what the new team can do.
5. Black Widow — Natasha Romanoff
Natasha Romanoff is a highly trained S.H.I.E.L.D. operative who works under the codename Black Widow. She has no superhuman powers, but compensates with espionage training, hand-to-hand combat, firearms expertise, infiltration skills, intelligence gathering, and psychological tactics.
Natasha is one of the first agents sent to activate the Avengers Initiative. She is also responsible for locating Bruce Banner and bringing him into the operation. Her approach is quieter and more calculated than that of the team’s larger-than-life heroes.
Her most important contribution comes when she confronts Loki after being captured. By turning the conversation toward the fear and guilt surrounding Clint Barton, she obtains information about the Tesseract and the portal. She later uses Loki’s scepter to close the portal above New York, making her central to the Avengers’ victory.
6. Hawkeye — Clint Barton
Clint Barton is a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and one of the world’s most accomplished archers. His specialized arrows, tactical awareness, fieldcraft, and exceptional accuracy make him dangerous despite having no superhuman abilities.

Hawkeye is present early in the film, but not as a free ally. Loki uses the Tesseract and his scepter to place Barton under mind control. As a result, he works against S.H.I.E.L.D. and the other heroes during the opening part of the story.
Natasha eventually breaks Loki’s control over him. Once restored, Barton joins the Avengers during the Battle of New York, where he operates from elevated positions and uses specialized arrows to attack enemy troops and support the team. His return also gives the original lineup a personal stake in defeating Loki.
How the original six came together
Nick Fury created the Avengers Initiative because some threats were too powerful for a single hero, spy agency, or conventional military force. He had already been monitoring potential recruits, including Stark, Rogers, Thor, Banner, Romanoff, and Barton.
Loki’s theft of the Tesseract forced Fury to act. The recruitment happened in stages rather than through one formal introduction:
- Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, and Bruce Banner were brought into the operation. Their initial assignment was to recover the Tesseract and deal with Loki.
- Thor arrived while the group was transporting Loki. He attempted to take his brother back to Asgard and fought Iron Man before Captain America separated them.
- Hawkeye remained under Loki’s control. Although Clint was one of Fury’s intended recruits, he was not functioning as an Avengers ally at this point.
- The team fractured on the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier. Arguments over Loki, the Tesseract, and the secrets surrounding the Avengers exposed how little trust existed between the recruits.
- Phil Coulson’s death changed the situation. Loki killed the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, and the loss gave the heroes a reason to stop acting as separate individuals.
- The Battle of New York completed the assembly. Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, and Hawkeye reached the city first. Thor and Hulk soon joined them, and all six fought together against the Chitauri.
The team therefore becomes “the Avengers” through action, not merely through Fury’s recruitment list. Marvel describes the Battle of New York as the first time the six heroes truly assemble as the Avengers.
The important comics-continuity difference
The original six in the MCU are not the same as the founding Avengers in Marvel Comics. The comic-book team debuted in Avengers #1, published on September 1, 1963, by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby.

| Continuity | Founding lineup | What happened to Captain America? |
|---|---|---|
| Marvel Cinematic Universe | Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye | He is part of the six-hero lineup in The Avengers (2012). |
| Marvel Comics | Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Ant-Man, and Wasp | He is discovered and revived in Avengers #4, published March 1, 1964. |
That distinction explains why two apparently different answers circulate. Captain America is one of the original six Avengers on screen, but he was not present in the first comic-book Avengers lineup. Ant-Man and Wasp, who founded the comic team, were not members of the six-hero lineup in the first Avengers film.
Common misconceptions about the original Avengers
Was Hawkeye absent from the first Avengers movie?
No. Clint Barton appears early in the film, although Loki controls him for part of the story. After Natasha frees him from that control, he fights alongside the team in New York.
Were the six already a united team when they met?
No. They argue, distrust one another, and pursue different priorities. Their cooperation becomes genuine only after Coulson’s death and the start of the Chitauri invasion.
Did this remain the permanent Avengers lineup?
No. The roster changed after the Battle of New York. Later MCU incarnations included heroes such as Vision, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, and War Machine, among others.
