Marjoe Gortner was a child preacher of extraordinary talent, who rose to fame in the bible belt of America during the 1940s. His parents capitalized on his remarkable gifts to fill their coffers until he outgrew his novelty. As an adult, Marjoe rejoined the ministry as a means to make money but had no interest in believing; instead, he used his fame as an evangelist to defraud people through tent revivals and televangelism.
The incredible story of Marjoe Gortner is documented in the marvelous 1972 Oscar-winning documentary by the same name. As seen in this film, Marjoe was able to bring thousands of people together and captivate them with his mesmerizing preaching which was filled with gusto and zeal. However, behind it all lurked a deep-seated cynicism which he revealed to the world upon reaching adulthood.
