Fur has been a controversial material for centuries, and today fur is being dropped from high-end fashion houses and governments alike. In the past few years, many countries have banned or are in the process of banning the sale of animal skins or products made of animal fur, with brands like Gucci, Burberry and Prada announcing their commitment to going fur-free.
However, despite this strong trend away from fur, it’s too early to declare victory against this cruel industry. In 2019, 35 million mink skins were sold worldwide – evidence that there is still a major demand for animal pelts.
This presents a major challenge for those who care about animal rights and environmental protection: how can we reduce the demand for fur? One key way is to bring greater public awareness to the issue by telling stories that expose the hidden cruelty of the industry.
