The Lost City of the Monkey God is a gripping documentary that offers a rare glimpse into one of the last unexplored patches on Earth. Located in the eastern section of Honduras, La Mosquitia is home to an array of pristine wilds and unbridled natural beauty. But, its 32,000 square miles of forests, mountains and swamplands are also shrouded in mystery and steeped in centuries-old folklore.
This probing film follows ambitious explorers as they investigate this rugged terrain by utilizing military-grade laser sensor technologies known as LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). The explorations prove fruitful, as various relics, structures and land masses come to light – providing clues to the civilizations that once populated these lands centuries ago.
The documentary also fills us in on the violent history of Honduras itself – which has long been marred by violence, civil wars and widespread corruption – further complicating any attempts at exploration. However, despite these difficulties, it’s clear that immense progress has been made over the years. In fact, several hundred miles are still untouched by human feet – potentially harboring unknown plant and wildlife for adventurers to discover.
If you’re looking for an intriguing glimpse into one of mankind’s most enigmatic regions then The Lost City of the Monkey God is definitely worth your time. Accompanied with stunning imagery and thought-provoking narration, this feature-length documentary immerses you in a land full of discovery and mystery – while bringing forth some interesting revelations along the way.
