Marvel released the issue on August 7, 2024.
It is not a replacement codename or a new official identity. It is a private, affectionate name from Rogue to a teammate she once had every reason to distrust. Its importance comes from the history behind it: Rogue began as one of the X-Men’s enemies, while Wolverine initially saw her as a dangerous criminal. In the current Uncanny X-Men series, they operate instead as trusted veterans inside a close, family-like team.
Why “Ground Bear” matters
“Ground Bear” is funny because it reduces Wolverine’s familiar image to something more personal. Logan is usually associated with claws, violence, a short temper, and the name Wolverine. Rogue’s nickname recognizes a different side of him: the powerful, battered, dependable presence who makes the people around him feel safer.
That is the emotional context of Uncanny X-Men #1. Rogue, Gambit, and Wolverine are brought together while Logan is grieving and keeping to himself. When he contacts them for help with the dragon Sadurang, the three begin working together with the ease of people who already understand one another.
#1 Best Overall
Rogue’s narration makes the relationship clear. Wolverine’s presence makes the situation feel “better” and “safer.” That reaction is a long way from the suspicion surrounding Rogue when she first joined the X-Men. By this point, Logan is not merely tolerated as another member of the team. He has become someone Rogue instinctively trusts.
Rogue and Wolverine’s history began with hostility
Rogue’s early history explains why the nickname represents more than a joke. She first appeared as a villain in Avengers Annual #10, published in May 1981. During that story, she attacked the Avengers and permanently absorbed Ms. Marvel’s powers and memories.
The experience left Rogue struggling with the Carol Danvers personality and abilities inside her. She eventually went to Professor Xavier for help and joined the X-Men in Uncanny X-Men #171, released in July 1983.
Her arrival was not welcomed by everyone. In Uncanny X-Men #172, published the following month, Wolverine is shocked and angry that Rogue has been accepted as an X-Man. His response was understandable from his perspective: he still saw her primarily as the former enemy who had attacked the Avengers and harmed Carol Danvers.
It would be inaccurate to say Wolverine “always hated” Rogue. His strongest hostility belongs to this early period, before she had demonstrated that her loyalties had changed. Their relationship developed as Rogue repeatedly showed that she was prepared to protect the people around her.
The moment Rogue proved herself
The first major turning point came almost immediately after Rogue joined the team. During the Japan storyline in Uncanny X-Men #173, Viper attacks Wolverine and Mariko Yashida with a lethal energy weapon. Rogue flies into the line of fire and takes the blast herself, saving them.
Rank #2
That action changes how the X-Men can judge her. Rogue is no longer only the former villain responsible for terrible harm. She is also a teammate willing to risk her life for people who do not yet fully trust her.
Marvel’s own biography of Rogue summarizes the broader change by noting that the X-Men accepted her after she put herself at risk to save Mariko Yashida and Colossus. For Wolverine in particular, Rogue’s sacrifice mattered because Mariko was one of the most important people in his life.
The incident did not erase Rogue’s past, but it gave Wolverine evidence that her choices were now different. Trust between them was built through actions rather than instantly granted through a single conversation.
From former enemies to family-like teammates
The 2024 Uncanny X-Men series places Rogue, Gambit, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Jubilee together as they establish a mutant haven in New Orleans during the post-Krakoa “From the Ashes” era.
Rogue is the group’s de facto leader. Gambit tells her that she is the leader because she is the person the others would follow. Wolverine’s role is different from Rogue’s, but he is still a central part of the group’s emotional foundation: an experienced, formidable teammate whose presence offers protection and stability.
That arrangement makes “Ground Bear” feel earned. Rogue is not giving a random nickname to a dangerous acquaintance. She is naming someone who has become part of her inner circle. The phrase carries familiarity, affection, and a little teasing irreverence—the kind of language that becomes possible after years of conflict have given way to confidence.

The closeness works in both directions. Wolverine repeatedly calls Rogue “Moonbeam.” This is Logan’s nickname for Rogue, not another name for Wolverine.
“Moonbeam” appears prominently in Uncanny X-Men #3, while Logan and Rogue communicate during an attack on him. It also appears in #6, during a conversation about Logan’s grief and trauma. Together, the two nicknames show how Gail Simone writes their relationship in this run: not as a romance, but as an emotionally intimate bond between trusted teammates.
Neither nickname should be treated as a long-established tradition from earlier X-Men stories. The available evidence supports their introduction in this contemporary series. “Ground Bear” is specifically introduced in the 2024 run, despite Rogue and Wolverine having interacted for decades.
Is Rogue and Wolverine’s relationship romantic?
No. The story presents Rogue and Wolverine as close allies with a protective, family-like bond. Rogue is married to Gambit in current continuity, and the nickname does not change that relationship.

Wolverine has his own major romantic histories, including his relationships with Mariko Yashida and Jean Grey. His bond with Rogue is better understood as mutual respect between two veteran X-Men who have survived difficult pasts and learned that they can rely on one another.
The dynamic is also not exactly the same as Wolverine’s well-known mentor relationships with Kitty Pryde or Jubilee. The 2024 series emphasizes that Rogue and Logan are experienced peers within the team. Rogue leads; Wolverine brings his hard-earned judgment, combat ability, and emotional weight. Their private names signal trust rather than romance.
“Ground Bear” continues beyond the first issue
The nickname is not confined to one memorable panel. “Ground Bear” appears again in Uncanny X-Men #6, released on November 27, 2024, and continues into later material, including the “X-Manhunt” storyline that begins with Uncanny X-Men #11 on March 5, 2025.
That continued use matters because it confirms that the name is part of Rogue and Logan’s ongoing way of speaking to each other. It is not a one-off gag that disappears after the launch issue.

Rogue calling Wolverine “Ground Bear” works because it compresses decades of character development into two words. Wolverine once regarded Rogue as a threat who had not earned a place among the X-Men. Rogue, in turn, had to prove that she could be trusted after her years as a villain.
Through sacrifice, teamwork, and repeated demonstrations of loyalty, that hostility became respect. Respect became reliance. In the current series, reliance has become something close to family.
So the accurate headline is not that Wolverine has received a new official name. Rogue has given Logan an affectionate nickname—one that reflects how far their relationship has traveled from suspicion and anger to genuine trust.
