The DC Animated Universe (DCAU) is the shared continuity that began with Batman: The Animated Series in 1992. It is not the same universe as the later DC Animated Movie Universe, which began with Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox in 2013.

The most useful viewing order follows the continuity’s major introductions and crossovers rather than placing every story strictly by its fictional date. That means watching Batman Beyond near the end, even though the show premiered before the final seasons of Justice League Unlimited. Keep Justice League Unlimited’s “Epilogue” until the very end of the main storyline.

What counts as the DCAU?

“DCAU” is a fan term for the interconnected animated continuity associated with Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and their collaborators. DC’s own material sometimes uses the label more broadly, but the original shared universe is built around eight television series and four core feature films.

Series Original run
Batman: The Animated Series 1992–1995
Superman: The Animated Series 1996–2000
The New Batman Adventures 1997–1999
Batman Beyond 1999–2001
Static Shock 2000–2004
The Zeta Project 2001–2002
Justice League 2001–2004
Justice League Unlimited 2004–2006

The New Batman Adventures is sometimes listed as if it were a new Batman universe. It is not. The character designs changed, but the show continues the story of Batman: The Animated Series with an older Bat-family and a different production format.

The recommended DCAU watch order

1. Batman: The Animated Series

Start with the complete series, including episodes released or marketed under the title The Adventures of Batman & Robin.

This is the foundation for the continuity’s versions of Batman, Joker, Harley Quinn, Robin, Batgirl and Gotham City. Watching the whole run also gives later character relationships more weight, particularly Batman’s connections with Dick Grayson, Barbara Gordon and the major Gotham villains.

2. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)

Watch the film after completing Batman: The Animated Series. Although much of the story uses flashbacks to Bruce Wayne’s early career, the film is not best treated as a prequel. Its main story belongs after the beginning of the series and assumes familiarity with this version of Batman.

Mask of the Phantasm was developed from the animated series and uses the same general creative approach and principal voice cast. It is the first major DCAU feature and remains essential rather than optional viewing.

3. Superman: The Animated Series

Watch the complete series next. The story moves the shared universe from Gotham to Metropolis and establishes the DCAU versions of Superman, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Supergirl and Darkseid.

Pay particular attention to the three-part “World’s Finest” crossover. It is part of Superman: The Animated Series, not an additional original movie. Some releases package those episodes as The Batman/Superman Movie: World’s Finest, but the story only needs to be watched once.

4. The New Batman Adventures

Continue with the complete series. Its redesigned character models can make it look like a reboot, but the story directly follows Batman: The Animated Series.

This era features a changed Bat-family lineup and a greater focus on Batgirl, Nightwing, Tim Drake’s Robin and Gotham’s wider supporting cast. The redesign is a production change, not a continuity reset.

5. Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero (1998)

Watch SubZero after The New Batman Adventures. The film is tied closely to the animated-series version of Gotham and is one of the original feature films generally treated as part of the DCAU.

6. Static Shock

Watch all four seasons after the Batman and Superman shows. Static Shock initially feels like a self-contained series, but it eventually connects with Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, the Justice League and characters from Batman Beyond.

Its crossovers make the show more important to the shared continuity than its early episodes suggest. Watching it before the Justice League shows also avoids having to interrupt the larger team-up storyline later.

7. Justice League

Watch both seasons in episode order. The series brings together Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Hawkgirl and Martian Manhunter, turning the separate hero stories into a single ongoing superhero continuity.

The three-part finale, “Starcrossed,” may be sold as Justice League: Star Crossed or Justice League: Starcrossed the Movie. It is still the television series’ finale, not a separate movie or a different universe entry.

8. The Zeta Project

The Zeta Project is a spin-off from Batman Beyond and takes place in the same future-oriented branch of the DCAU. For a practical first viewing, watch it after Justice League.

Its exact position is flexible. The series is relatively self-contained, so it can also be watched after Batman Beyond without causing a significant continuity problem.

9. Justice League Unlimited, except “Epilogue”

Watch Justice League Unlimited in episode order, but stop before the episode “Epilogue.” The series expands the roster far beyond the original seven League members and continues the present-day DCAU storyline.

Do not treat “Epilogue” as an ordinary episode to watch whenever it appears in a streaming menu. It contains major information about Terry McGinnis and is designed to function as the conclusion of the Batman Beyond storyline.

10. Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman (2003)

Place Mystery of the Batwoman after The New Batman Adventures and before the final future-era conclusion. In the practical order, watching it after Justice League Unlimited is convenient.

The film is set in the established DCAU version of Gotham and does not depend heavily on the Justice League plot. It can therefore be moved earlier, provided it follows The New Batman Adventures.

11. Batman Beyond

Now watch the complete series. The show jumps decades into the future, where Terry McGinnis becomes Batman under the guidance of an older Bruce Wayne.

There are two reasonable approaches:

  • Continuity-first order: watch it after Justice League Unlimited, as listed here.
  • Release-aware order: watch it earlier, before the final seasons of Justice League Unlimited, because that reflects how audiences originally encountered the shows.

For a first-time viewer, the continuity-first order is cleaner. The important rule is to avoid watching “Epilogue” before finishing Batman Beyond.

12. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (2000)

Watch Return of the Joker after the complete Batman Beyond series. The film revisits Bruce Wayne, Terry, Tim Drake and the Joker, using flashbacks to reveal earlier events.

Those flashbacks do not move the entire film earlier in the order. The present-day story belongs after the Batman Beyond series, so watch it as a future-era feature at this point.

13. Justice League Unlimited: “Epilogue”

Finish the core DCAU with “Epilogue.” Although it is technically an episode of Justice League Unlimited, its main story takes place in the future and brings the Terry McGinnis and Bruce Wayne material to a conclusion.

Rank #4

Watching it last preserves its revelations about Terry’s origins and his connection to Bruce.

The four core DCAU films

Year Film Best placement
1993 Batman: Mask of the Phantasm After Batman: The Animated Series
1998 Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero After The New Batman Adventures
2000 Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker After Batman Beyond
2003 Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman After The New Batman Adventures, before “Epilogue”

These are the four feature-length films most consistently identified with the original DCAU. Their release dates do not provide a perfect viewing order, because Return of the Joker is a future-set story and Mystery of the Batwoman arrived after the main Batman television shows.

Optional DCAU-adjacent films

Batman and Harley Quinn (2017)

Watch this after “Epilogue” if you want the later Bruce Timm-style material. It brings back DCAU-associated performers and deliberately resembles the earlier animated continuity.

Its canon status is disputed. DC has included it in a recent DCAU-oriented Batman guide, while other DC material describes the continuity relevance of later tie-in projects as questionable. Treat it as an optional epilogue rather than a necessary part of the core story.

Justice League vs. the Fatal Five (2019)

This film reunites several principal Justice League Unlimited voice performers and uses a similar visual language. Its safest classification is DCAU-adjacent.

Watch it after Justice League Unlimited and “Epilogue” if you want to include it. It is not required to understand the ending of the original continuity.

Complete practical order

  1. Batman: The Animated Series
  2. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
  3. Superman: The Animated Series
  4. The New Batman Adventures
  5. Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero
  6. Static Shock
  7. Justice League
  8. The Zeta Project
  9. Justice League Unlimited, excluding “Epilogue”
  10. Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman
  11. Batman Beyond
  12. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
  13. Justice League Unlimited — “Epilogue”
  14. Batman and Harley Quinn — optional and continuity-disputed
  15. Justice League vs. the Fatal Five — optional and DCAU-adjacent

What is not part of this timeline?

Not every DC animated film that uses a familiar voice actor or a similar character design belongs to the DCAU.

  • The DC Animated Movie Universe: Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox begins a separate continuity that continues through Justice League Dark: Apokolips War.
  • Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and Superman/Batman: Apocalypse: these films form their own continuity. Kevin Conroy’s Batman and Tim Daly’s Superman do not make them DCAU sequels.
  • Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths and Justice League: Doom: these belong to a separate two-film continuity.
  • Batman Beyond: The Movie: this is a home-video compilation of the first two Batman Beyond episodes, not a separate original feature.
  • The Batman/Superman Movie: World’s Finest: this is a repackaging of the three-part World’s Finest crossover from Superman: The Animated Series.

Voice casting is a useful clue, but it is not a continuity test. Production history, recurring character versions and direct story connections matter more than whether the same actor returns.

Source notes

DC’s series and film pages provide the release information and character context for the core shows and movies, including Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, The Zeta Project, Justice League Unlimited and Return of the Joker. DC’s recent Batman viewing guide also discusses which films are grouped with the DCAU and which later projects have a less certain continuity status.

FAQ

Is The New Batman Adventures a reboot of Batman: The Animated Series?

No. It is a direct continuation with redesigned character models, a changed production format and an older Bat-family lineup.

Should I watch Batman Beyond before or after Justice League Unlimited?

For a first viewing, watch Batman Beyond after the main Justice League Unlimited run. Release order also works, but do not watch “Epilogue” before finishing Batman Beyond.

Where does Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman fit?

Watch it after The New Batman Adventures. It can be placed before or after most of the Justice League era, as long as it comes before “Epilogue.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Batman and Harley Quinn core DCAU canon?

Its status is disputed. It was designed as a continuation of the Bruce Timm-era style, but it is safest to treat it as an optional post-Justice League Unlimited story.

Is Justice League vs. the Fatal Five part of the DCAU?

It is best described as DCAU-adjacent. The returning cast and visual style connect it to the earlier shows, but its exact continuity status is not unambiguous.

Is Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox part of this universe?

No. It begins the separate DC Animated Movie Universe, which runs through Justice League Dark: Apokolips War.

The Bottom Line

For the cleanest first-time experience, watch the complete television runs in this sequence: Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, Static Shock, Justice League, The Zeta Project, Justice League Unlimited, then Batman Beyond. Add the four core films at their listed points, watch Return of the Joker after Batman Beyond, and save “Epilogue” for last. Everything after that is optional, DCAU-adjacent material rather than essential core viewing.
