The history of life on Earth and that of fire have been intrinsically intertwined since the dawn of time. Volcanism was the impetus for the formation of the first organic molecules and subsequently, the emergence of life on our planet. In Alaska, rivers are fed by snowfields from the highest mountains in North America, home to some of the most active volcanoes in the world. When a volcano erupts, it poisons the fish living in its waters.
Scientists are attempting to understand what may have occurred more than two thousand years ago by observing salmon’s curious behavior: when death approaches, they miraculously return to their native river. It’s an epic journey through life and death that is explored in great detail in a documentary film.
Countless species rely on fresh water from Alaska’s rivers to survive. They are home to some of the largest salmon runs in North America, a fact not lost on those studying these creatures’ behavior patterns so closely. Understanding why they swim upstream towards their birthplace before meeting their fate can provide invaluable insight into how animals interact with their environment and how natural disasters affect them.
The documentary delves deep into this phenomenon, capturing captivating moments along the salmon’s path during their annual migration from freshwaters to ocean depths and back again. The breathtaking cinematography highlights both beauty and danger as viewers follow these remarkable fish on their incredible journey.
