Chinese filmmaker Weijun Chen has crafted a delightful documentary that takes us into the world of Chinese schoolchildren, as they grapple with one of the country’s rarest experiences – democracy. The students at a Wuhan school are presented with the chance to choose their own class monitor and the result is nothing short of spectacular.
The kids take to the election feverishly, spurred on by their parents. Candidates launch campaigns filled with bribery and coercion, while others attempt to win votes through more traditional means like promises of parties or improved lunch options. Through it all, there’s plenty of tears and tantrums along the way. When it comes time for the vote, you won’t be able to look away from this compelling story that offers a unique glimpse into Chinese culture and education system.
