The reports documented a public disagreement about the idea—not a booked bout. The headline’s terms “rages” and “weasel out” are characterizations, not established facts about Musk’s motives.
Why Zuckerberg said he was moving on
In a Threads post quoted by MMA Fighting on Aug. 13, 2023, Zuckerberg said he had offered a real date and that UFC president Dana White had offered to make the bout a charity competition. Zuckerberg said Musk had not confirmed the date, had mentioned a possible surgery, and had proposed a practice round in Zuckerberg’s backyard. He said he would move on unless Musk committed to a real date and official event.
“I think we can all agree Elon isn’t serious and it’s time to move on. I offered a real date. Dana White offered to make this a legit competition for charity. Elon won’t confirm a date, then says he needs surgery, and now asks to do a practice round in my backyard instead. If Elon ever gets serious about a real date and official event, he knows how to reach me. Otherwise, time to move on. I’m going to focus on competing with people who take the sport seriously.”
— Mark Zuckerberg, in a Threads post, as quoted by MMA Fighting

Those details are Zuckerberg’s account of the exchange. The contemporaneous coverage does not independently establish Musk’s motives or verify that every proposed arrangement had been made.
Was a fight date actually set?
No confirmed date is established in the cited reporting. ABC News reported that Zuckerberg had suggested Aug. 26 as a possible date, while Musk had not confirmed it. That makes Aug. 26 a proposal, not a scheduled event date. ABC News’ Aug. 14, 2023 report described the exchange as a dispute over a possible contest.

Was the bout officially arranged?
The contemporaneous reports establish public discussion of a possible fight and Zuckerberg’s claim that White offered to arrange a charity competition. They do not establish that the men had booked a fight, finalized an event, or agreed to a date. In other words, a suggested date and public challenge were not the same as an officially arranged bout.

Zuckerberg publicly challenged Musk’s seriousness and said it was time to move on. The headline’s “rages” and “weasel out” should be read as editorial framing, not as neutral findings: the reported facts are that Zuckerberg said Musk had not confirmed a date and described the backyard practice proposal. The cited accounts do not settle why Musk did not confirm.
