When is Zootopia 3 coming out?
There is no confirmed release date or theatrical window for Zootopia 3. In a September 4, 2026 update, Walt Disney Animation Studios said the film is in early development and that its release timing will be announced at a later date. Disney announced the project at its August 2026 Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23. Disney’s announcement is the latest official timing information cited here.

Any specific year or release window circulating without a newer official announcement should be treated as speculation. Disney Animation’s general production timeline does not establish this film’s schedule: in a separate interview, Chief Creative Officer Jared Bush said it takes about five years to make one of the studio’s films. That was a general comment, not a forecast for Zootopia 3. Bush’s interview does not provide a production timetable for the sequel.
Is Zootopia 3 confirmed?
Yes. Disney has confirmed that a third film is in early development. That confirms the project, not a release date, completed production, or a full account of its story and cast. The studio’s September update followed the film’s D23 announcement the month before.

Did Zootopia 2 tease the third film?
Yes. The post-credits scene in Zootopia 2 shows a feather floating onto Judy Hopps’s windowsill. Disney later connected that image to the next installment. Jared Bush, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, said: “Obviously, at the end of Zootopia 2, you see this little teaser of a feather coming in. What that means for Nick and Judy, what that means for the world of Zootopia, that’s going to be the fun surprise of this movie.”
What does the feather mean?
Disney has not disclosed the feather’s specific story meaning. It is a deliberate setup, but the company has not identified the bird, character, or plot development it represents. Bush has said birds will play a major role in the next film, without revealing how they enter the story.

Disney leadership has described the intended direction in broader terms. Bush said the filmmakers want familiar characters to return while bringing new elements. Clark Spencer, President of Disney Animation, said the story can expand into other districts and noted that birds are being introduced after the previous film brought reptiles into the world. He also said Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps remain at the series’ core, with Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin central to the films. These comments indicate creative intent; Disney has not published a complete plot synopsis or cast list for the third film.
Director Byron Howard has described the continuing theme as “predator versus prey, and how those two get along.” That is thematic direction rather than a detailed plot reveal.

Why a third film is moving forward
Disney’s reported performance figures help explain the franchise’s momentum, but they do not predict when a sequel will arrive. On March 19, 2026, Disney said Zootopia 2 had 32 million global views on Disney+ in its first seven days and was the service’s number-one film during its premiere week. The same release reported more than 885 million hours streamed globally across Zootopia, Zootopia+, and Zootopia 2, and a $1.9 billion worldwide gross for Zootopia 2. These are company-reported figures, not independently audited estimates in that release. Disney’s March 2026 announcement provides the figures and their context.
For release-date context, Disney lists Zootopia 2’s theatrical release as November 26, 2025. That prior date, along with a general statement about how long animated films can take, does not establish a timetable for the new film. Disney’s film page lists the sequel’s release date.
