Zoey Luna plays Lourdes, a trans Latinx member of the coven in The Craft: Legacy, a scripted horror film connected to the 1996 The Craft. In a 2020 interview with People CHICA, Luna tied the role to a broader goal: changing how audiences see trans people, pushing back on horror stories that cast trans characters as villains, and encouraging acceptance and inclusion. The statements below come from 2020 coverage. They describe the film’s intent and production, not its audience impact, and they do not establish Luna’s current projects or advocacy.
What Luna said about the role
Changing how people view trans people
Asked what she hoped the part would do, Luna answered directly: “What I hope to change is the way people view trans people.” She connected that goal to a pattern she sees in genre filmmaking. In the same People CHICA interview she said: “In a lot of films, especially in the horror genre, trans people are villainized — they are the murderers of the movie.” Her objection is to that convention itself, not only to a single film.
Coming out as a way to reach viewers
Luna also linked the role to her own life. She said: “I feel that my story and coming out as a young trans woman was very important.” Her framing is that sharing that experience can reach people who are struggling with their own identity, and she called for greater acceptance and inclusion as the wider aim.
Visibility as the point
Her shortest statement of the idea is also the most general: “I think my characters show that we are here.” The claim is about presence on screen. It does not promise a particular outcome for viewers, and the 2020 interview does not describe any measured response.

How the film frames Lourdes
Writer-director Zoe Lister-Jones described the choice to include a trans coven member as deliberate. In a Vogue interview published October 28, 2020, she said: “When I wrote the script, I wanted one of our coven members to be a trans woman, because I think any brand of feminism that excludes trans women’s voices is not feminism.” In a separate interview with The Credits, she addressed how the character is written: “It was intentional that her trans identity was important, but also didn’t have to define her narrative.”
Those two statements make it possible to separate two questions that are often merged when readers discuss representation in this film:

| Question | What the 2020 sources report about Lourdes |
|---|---|
| Is the character’s trans identity acknowledged in the story? | Yes. Lister-Jones calls the identity intentional and important, and People CHICA describes Lourdes as a trans Latinx witch. |
| Is that identity the character’s entire narrative? | No, according to Lister-Jones, who says it was meant to be important without defining Lourdes. |
The two questions can have different answers, and reporting on this film gives an answer to each. Neither answer says how viewers responded.
How the production approached trans inclusion
Representation on screen was only one part of the work. TheWrap reported that Lister-Jones partnered with GLAAD and trans-inclusion consultant Scott Turner Schofield on script language, and that the effort included avoiding microaggressions and loaded wording. The same report quotes GLAAD associate director of transgender representation Alex Schmider describing the casting and character as inclusion in a major studio film.

These are two different kinds of evidence. The on-screen character is what audiences see. The consultation is what the production says it did behind the scenes. Reporting confirms both, but it does not show how closely either shaped individual scenes, and the sources do not rank one above the other.
Luna’s background as reported in 2020
A 2020 Los Angeles Times profile listed Luna’s earlier appearances in the documentary Raising Zoey, HBO’s 15: A Quinceañera Story, Rosario Dawson’s short film Boundless, and FX’s Pose. It described her as an outspoken trans-rights activist with a working relationship with GLAAD. Those are descriptions from that moment in time. They are not a complete or current biography.

What the evidence does and does not establish
- Established: Luna’s stated goals, Lister-Jones’s account of the role, and the consultation described by TheWrap, all from 2020 coverage.
- Not established: any measured effect on audiences, attitudes, or the wider industry. No figures on viewer response or trans representation in this film were identified.
- Not established: Luna’s current 2026 projects or current advocacy work.
- Not established: current streaming platforms, a physical-media edition, or retailer availability for the film. Check current listings directly before watching.
Readers who want to judge the representation for themselves should watch the film and compare what Luna and Lister-Jones described with what appears on screen. The interviews state intent; the film itself is the evidence of execution.
