Where the bubble silhouette sits in 2025 fashion
Marie Claire connects Saldaña’s three-tier Saint Laurent skirt to bubble silhouettes on Spring 2025 runways and in both luxury and affordable retail. It reports that the bubble skirt surged in popularity the year before and stayed visible in collections and street style. These are fashion-editorial observations, not an independent market census.
Brooke Bobb, fashion news director for Harper’s Bazaar, spoke to the Associated Press about the event as a whole: “The Oscars red carpet style really leaned into old Hollywood glamour, which is a trend that’s been building throughout the last year on the red carpet and on the runways.” That is a comment on the red carpet overall, not an assessment of Saldaña’s gown. It also means the Oscars did not start the bubble trend. The silhouette was already on runways and in stores before the ceremony.

The search-growth figures
Marie Claire also cites a 185 percent increase in Pinterest searches for “bubble skirts” and a 155 percent increase on Google, attributed to Style Analytics and its data analyst Molly Rooyakkers. The report does not state the comparison period. Treat these numbers as directional evidence that interest rose, not as a year-over-year measurement.
“Extreme” is a judgment, not a measurement
Some parts of the look can be measured. The skirt has three tiers, it is described as highly voluminous, and the bodice is sheer and embellished. Whether all of that adds up to “extreme” depends on the viewer’s standard for red-carpet dressing.

Saldaña herself framed the choice in artistic terms. Speaking to E!, as reported by Marie Claire, she said, “To me, fashion is art.” That statement describes her approach, not how the dress was received, and it does not settle whether the volume went too far.
If you want to test the “extreme” claim yourself, compare three things: how much of the silhouette the skirt occupies relative to the bodice, how much of the upper outfit is embellished versus plain, and whether the restrained gloves and hair balance the volume. By those measures, the dress is bold rather than chaotic.

Recreating the silhouette without claiming a replica
Because no identical retail version is established, any shopping path should be a similar silhouette, not the same garment. Describe recreations as interpretations of the bubble hem or tiered shape. When comparing options, check:
