Zoe Saldaña said she was sad and, later, disappointed about the controversy around her Emilia Pérez co-star Karla Sofía Gascón, whose resurfaced social media posts drew sharp criticism in late January and early February 2025. Saldaña said she did not support racist or bigoted rhetoric. She also described her own experience making the film as collaborative, and said she could still be proud of the work. Her remarks were not an endorsement of Gascón’s views.
What Saldaña said, and when
Saldaña addressed the controversy twice within a week. The two remarks differ in tone and in how much they reveal, so it helps to take them separately.
January 31, 2025: the London Q&A
At a Q&A in London, Saldaña said she was still working through what had happened in the preceding days and that she felt sad about it. As reported by TheWrap (January 31, 2025), she said: “I’m still processing everything that has transpired in the last couple of days, and I’m sad.”
She tied that sadness to her position on the posts. “It makes me really sad because I don’t support [it], and I don’t have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group,” she said. At the same event she described her work with the people who made the film in terms of inclusivity, collaboration, and racial, cultural, and gender equity.

February 6, 2025: the Variety Awards Circuit podcast
In a podcast interview for Variety’s awards coverage, Saldaña returned to the subject at more length. The Los Angeles Times (February 6, 2025) quoted her saying: “I’m sad. Time and time again, that’s the word because that is the sentiment that has been living in my chest since everything happened.” She added: “I’m also disappointed. I can’t speak for other people’s actions. All I can attest to is my experience, and never in a million years did I ever believe that we would be here.”
She also said she was allowing herself to feel joy about the work the cast had done together, and she closed on individual accountability: “But we are also individuals who are responsible for everything that we say and everything that we do.” The Guardian’s report of the same interview (February 6, 2025; updated February 17, 2025) carries the same central quotes.

Two things she kept apart
Saldaña’s remarks draw a line between two subjects that the controversy tended to merge.
Her experience on the film
Saldaña spoke only about her own time on set. She described the cast and crew as collaborative and said she could remain proud of what the film achieved. In the Variety interview she framed this as something she was permitted to enjoy, not a rebuttal of the criticism.

Her position on the rhetoric
On the posts themselves, her position did not change between the two remarks. She rejected racist and bigoted rhetoric and said she had no tolerance for negative rhetoric toward any group. She did not speak for Gascón, and she said she could not speak for anyone else’s actions.
Did Saldaña back Gascón?
No. According to The Guardian, Gascón said that Saldaña and Selena Gomez supported her. Saldaña did not confirm that claim in the Variety interview. Instead she restated that she did not support racist or bigoted rhetoric. Reporting on her remarks therefore does not show her endorsing Gascón’s statements, and any reading that treats her comments as support would go beyond what she said.
