Zendaya’s engagement ring, first seen on her left hand at the 2025 Golden Globes, is credited by fashion outlets and jewelers with bringing the east-west setting back into conversation. That renewed visibility is well documented in the reporting. The claim that it was the year’s biggest diamond trend is an editorial framing, though. None of the coverage establishes a market-wide ranking, sales figure, or search-demand change.
What an east-west engagement ring is
An east-west ring is one in which the diamond sits horizontally across the finger, so its longest side runs parallel to the band. The more familiar north-south setting places the long axis along the length of the finger. British Vogue’s January 2025 explainer quotes London jeweler Rachel Boston defining the style this way: “An east-west engagement ring features a stone that has been set horizontally, with its most elongated side set parallel to the ring band.”

The practical point is that shape decides whether the sideways orientation reads clearly. A round stone set east-west looks like a round stone on its side; an elongated stone set the same way shows its orientation at a glance.
What has been reported about Zendaya’s ring
The Golden Globes appearance, January 5, 2025
Zendaya wore a prominent diamond ring on her left ring finger at the 2025 Golden Globes on January 5, 2025. The Associated Press reported the next day, January 6, that the ring had set off engagement speculation. At that point, AP noted, representatives had not returned its requests for comment.

The reported identification, ELLE, August 4, 2025
ELLE reported that the ring “appears to be” a design by London jeweler Jessica McCormack. The article reproduces the jeweler’s product description, which lists:
- Type: button-back ring
- Stone: 5.02-carat east-west cushion diamond
- Setting: Georgian-style cut-down setting
- Metal: 18k white gold and yellow gold
Treat the identification as reported rather than confirmed. Neither Zendaya nor the jeweler is quoted in the reporting confirming each specification, so the 5.02-carat figure is the product description ELLE reproduced, not an independent measurement. ELLE also cites estimates of the ring’s value that vary widely, and the jeweler does not publish a price in that article. No value is confirmed here.

Why the style is getting attention
British Vogue’s January 8, 2025 coverage by Elise Taylor predicted that the ring would reignite interest in the style. It noted that east-west settings were popular in the Art Deco era and were harder to find in the modern market until roughly the previous five years. Gemologist Olivia Landau, quoted in that piece, said: “Zendaya’s engagement ring will definitely reignite the east-west trend.”
ELLE’s August 2025 report went further, quoting jewelers who described client interest and said the ring had helped make the style more mainstream. Ann Grimmett, vice president of merchandising at Jared Jewelers, said: “Zendaya highlighted a ‘what’s old is new again’ trend and made east-west more mainstream.”

The reporting supports a narrower claim than the headline. Here is what it does and does not establish.

The accurate version of the story is that a high-profile ring brought a long-dormant orientation back into fashion coverage, and that jewelers reported more interest in it. The reporting does not measure how far that interest went.

Beverly Hills jeweler Martin Katz, quoted by British Vogue, offered a principle that applies beyond this style: “You should always find a stone that is going to be reflective of your personality.” Choose the orientation and shape you want to wear first, then check the setting and budget against that choice.
Lower-cost fashion rings with a sideways stone are also sold. They are not the fine-jewelry design reported for Zendaya, and their stone, metal, and construction should be checked separately.
Later development: the couple’s marriage, June 2026
ELLE reported on June 16, 2026 that Zendaya had been wearing a simple gold band, sometimes alongside the engagement ring, and that Tom Holland had confirmed the couple had married. This is later context about the couple. It is not evidence about 2025 jewelry demand, and it does not change the assessment of the trend above.
