That is why Tashi’s entire arc can be read as a return to this scene. Tashi appears to direct the scene. She positions herself between the men, controls who receives her attention, and moves the kissing from one pairing to another. But the staging gradually exposes something she cannot entirely contain. The energy shifts toward Art and Patrick, who kiss one another as Tashi looks on.
The distinction between a three-way make-out scene and a completed sexual encounter matters. Challengers does not depict explicit sex here. Its erotic charge comes from implication, interruption, anticipation, and the sudden recognition that Art and Patrick’s bond has its own force. Tashi may initiate the encounter, but she does not fully own its meaning.
Josh O’Connor has described the sequence as carefully planned by Guadagnino, with the actors collaborating on the physical details and incorporating some improvisation based on their understanding of the characters. The result feels less like a conventional love-triangle scene than like a diagram of the three characters’ emotional geometry.
Tashi is not choosing between two men
A conventional love triangle asks a question such as: Which person will the protagonist choose? Tashi’s situation is more complicated. She is interested in Art and Patrick separately, but she is also fascinated by what happens when they are placed in competition with one another.
The hotel scene gives her control over that situation. She sets the pace, distributes attention, and watches the men respond. Her power comes from making herself the object through which their relationship becomes visible. Art and Patrick’s desire for Tashi gives their connection a socially understandable form, but the scene suggests that their attraction to one another—and their need to test themselves against one another—is not merely incidental.
This is the first major indication that Tashi does not simply want one man more than the other. She wants the intensity generated by the triangle itself. The men are most compelling to her when they are rivals, because rivalry gives her access to the emotional voltage of a tennis match.

The hotel room is a miniature tennis court
Challengers repeatedly makes sex and tennis feel like variations on the same language. Both depend on positioning, rhythm, anticipation, feints, reversals, and the management of attention. The hotel encounter is therefore not separate from the film’s sports drama. It is the first private version of the contest that will define the characters’ adult lives.
- Tashi converts desire into competition. Instead of directly stating what she wants, she creates a situation in which Art and Patrick must respond to one another.
- Art and Patrick communicate through rivalry. Their closeness is expressed through challenge, provocation, and the need to measure themselves against each other.
- Tashi prefers mediation to vulnerability. It is easier for her to manage a match or manipulate a relationship than to ask plainly for care.
- The film treats intimacy as a contest of access. Who gets Tashi’s attention, who is excluded, and who can force a reversal are all part of the erotic structure.

The hotel scene alone cannot explain Tashi’s adult behavior. Her knee injury is the event that transforms a charged adolescent dynamic into the structure of her life.
Before the injury, Tashi is a teenage tennis phenomenon who expects to become a professional. She does not merely enjoy tennis; the sport is the source of her identity, ambition, authority, and future. When the injury ends her playing career, she loses the direct route to the intensity she understands best.
Coaching Art gives her a way back into elite tennis. She can still read the court, shape a strategy, influence a player, and participate in the pressure of competition. But she experiences the sport indirectly. Art’s career becomes the vessel for ambitions that she can no longer pursue with her own body.
That substitution explains why Patrick remains such a threat to her carefully built life. He is not only a former lover or Art’s rival. He is a route back to the unpredictability Tashi misses. Art’s controlled success can provide security, but Patrick’s presence restores volatility—and with it, the feeling that something genuinely consequential is happening.

In this sense, Tashi is “playing” the decisive match through the two men. The final tournament is not simply about whether Art or Patrick wins. It is Tashi’s attempt to recover the sensation of being inside a high-stakes contest, even though she is now standing outside the lines.
Why Tashi’s manipulation is also a defense
It is easy to reduce Tashi to a femme fatale who pits two men against each other for amusement. The film is more interested in the cost of her control.
Zendaya has described Tashi as difficult to empathize with because she uses sex and competition to manipulate or destabilize Art and Patrick. But she has also emphasized that Tashi is constantly making decisions and carrying responsibility without anyone asking what she needs. Those two descriptions belong together. Tashi’s controlling behavior is not proof that she feels nothing; it is one of the ways she protects herself from having to reveal how much she has lost.
She can decide who plays, who trains, who is threatened, and what each man believes he must prove. What she cannot easily do is acknowledge that she misses playing tennis herself, that she may need both men in different ways, or that her marriage and career depend on an emotional arrangement no one can safely sustain.
The hotel encounter therefore functions as a relational blueprint. Tashi learns that she can bind Art and Patrick together by turning their rivalry into a shared erotic space. In adulthood, she repeats the pattern through coaching, marriage, provocation, and the final tournament. Yet each repetition also demonstrates its limits: Art and Patrick are not instruments without desires of their own.
The film’s queer energy remains deliberately unresolved
Challengers does not give Art or Patrick an explicit identity label, nor does it turn their kiss into a conventional coming-out narrative. Its queer or bi-curious energy works primarily through implication and behavior. The men’s mutual attraction is visible, but it is embedded in years of competition, loyalty, resentment, and physical recognition.

That ambiguity is essential to the film. The question is not simply whether Art and Patrick are secretly in love or whether Tashi is “really” attracted to both of them. The more revealing point is that the three characters cannot keep their sexual, emotional, and competitive attachments in separate compartments. Tennis gives their desire a socially acceptable shape, while desire gives tennis an intensity that exceeds sport.
When Tashi watches Art and Patrick kiss, she is witnessing both a discovery and a loss of control. She has created the conditions for the moment, but the moment does not belong entirely to her.

The final match does not resolve the triangle by awarding Tashi one man. Instead, it pushes Art and Patrick back toward one another.
Throughout the film, Tashi uses the possibility of the match to provoke them. She wants Art to become more aggressive, Patrick to become more disciplined, and both men to confront the history they have avoided. But once the match begins, it develops beyond her intentions. Their competition becomes a language of renewed intimacy, one they understand more completely than anyone watching from outside.
The match’s conclusion is emotionally open, including the question of its precise competitive outcome. What matters most is not who is awarded the victory, but what the collision allows Art and Patrick to recover. Their connection is no longer merely a byproduct of competing for Tashi. That echoes the hotel room. In both scenes, Tashi is the catalyst and the observer. In the hotel, she helps create a moment in which Art and Patrick cross a boundary. At the tournament, she again brings them into contact through competition, only to see the emotional result exceed her control.

Why the film rewards a second viewing
The hotel sequence becomes more revealing after the ending because the viewer can recognize its patterns everywhere: in the way Tashi coaches Art, in the way Patrick provokes her, in the way Art and Patrick communicate across a net, and in the way every apparent choice creates another contest.

The electronic score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross is another part of the film’s structure worth revisiting.
