Serena Williams told Zendaya she could tell the tennis balls in Challengers were not real, then praised Zendaya’s performance even though Zendaya had never played tennis with a real ball before. Zendaya gave that account in an April 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight, and Williams’s own later comments, published by Vanity Fair in June 2024, add a second layer to her reaction.
What Zendaya said Serena Williams told her
In Entertainment Tonight’s April 19, 2024 report, Zendaya recounted two remarks from Williams. The first concerned the ball itself. Zendaya quoted Williams as saying, “I know there definitely weren’t real [tennis] balls.” Zendaya’s reply was, “She knows. She’s the best of the best.”
The second remark was praise. Zendaya said Williams told her it was “great considering that I had never, never touched a tennis ball before.” These words come from Zendaya’s retelling. The report does not include a separate quote from Williams on the topic.
Why the tennis-ball detail is credible
The observation fits how the film was made. In a Vogue profile published April 9, 2024, Zendaya described training for the role by shadowing a body double’s gestures and footwork rather than relying on a ball she could hit. She explained that the ball was added in post-production. A tennis player watching closely would be well placed to notice that a ball had been inserted digitally, which is the point Zendaya attributes to Williams.

Williams’s separate reaction to the film
Vanity Fair’s June 15, 2024 report carried Williams’s own assessment, separate from the Entertainment Tonight account. She said, “I thought it was good!” She also said she felt the film captured aspects of the game that players rarely discuss: “I actually felt like there was so much accuracy in there about things that we don’t think about as tennis players or even talk about as tennis players.”
Her one criticism concerned the story. She said, “I wanted there to be more of an ending,” and asked Zendaya whether there was more and whether the characters won.

What is and is not established
- Established: Zendaya publicly said Williams noticed the balls were not real and praised her performance. Williams separately called the film good and said it was accurate about tennis players’ experience.
- Not established by these reports: Williams’s exact words in private. Both the ball remark and the praise come from Zendaya’s recollection, and no independent account from Williams of those specific conversations appears in the coverage cited here.
- Dates matter: The Entertainment Tonight remarks were published in April 2024 and the Vanity Fair comments in June 2024. Later interviews may have addressed the same subject differently.
How to read the two accounts together
The two sources support the same overall reaction: Williams saw the tennis as real enough to notice what was missing, and she was generous about the performance. Her public comments are more precise about the film’s accuracy and its ending than the Entertainment Tonight account, which relies on Zendaya’s memory of a conversation.
For readers who want the full context of the film’s tennis work, the Vogue profile is the more detailed source. It covers the training and the post-production choice that Williams’s comment touches on.
