The intimate hotel-room sequence in Challengers was not an entirely improvised sex scene. Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor have described it as a carefully planned, technically demanding sequence: director Luca Guadagnino established the progression, an intimacy coordinator helped the actors work safely, and the three-way kiss was filmed in one shot. Within that structure, the performers worked out some movements organically from their characters’ complicated relationships.
That distinction matters. The finished film can feel spontaneous and intensely private, but the actors were performing in front of a full film crew, coordinating dialogue, bodies, camera movement, blocking, and repeated takes. The apparent contradiction—careful choreography that still feels impulsive—is central to why the scene works.
Zendaya says an intimacy coordinator helped establish trust
Zendaya said the production employed an intimacy coordinator whom she described as “fantastic and very helpful.” The coordinator’s role was not to remove the emotional charge from the material. It was to help the actors define boundaries, communicate clearly, and feel safe while performing intimate kissing and physical-contact scenes.

The three principal actors also spent time building trust away from the camera. Zendaya said they played tennis, went out together, rehearsed, and developed a shared comfort before tackling the most exposed material. That preparation was especially important because the scene involves Tashi Duncan, Art Donaldson, and Patrick Zweig—a triangle whose sexual and competitive histories are inseparable.
Extra’s account of the actors’ interview adds an important detail that viewers may not consider: a full crew and cameras were present for the racy scenes. The performers may appear isolated inside the story, but the production itself was anything but private. Lighting, camera operators, sound, direction, continuity, and other departments all had to work around the actors’ movements.
What was planned—and what was worked out by the actors?
Josh O’Connor gave the clearest explanation of the sequence’s construction. According to his account, Guadagnino had a specific progression in mind: the characters kiss, move into a three-way kiss, and then Art and Patrick kiss. The overall dramatic destination was therefore established before filming.
The actors still had room to determine how those beats would physically happen. O’Connor said the performers worked through the mechanics together and added small, character-based movements. One example was Patrick’s quick movement toward the bed after Tashi moves onto it. O’Connor connected that choice to his understanding of Patrick and to the shifting dynamic among all three characters.
That is a more precise description than saying the scene was “improvised.” The sequence was not unplanned, and the actors were not inventing the entire encounter in the moment. Instead, Guadagnino provided a framework while the performers found behavior that felt truthful for Tashi, Art, and Patrick.
In practical terms, the scene combined three layers:
- Directorial structure: Guadagnino knew the order and emotional progression he wanted.
- Intimacy choreography: the actors had to agree on physical actions and coordinate them safely.
- Character-led detail: small gestures and transitions could emerge from the performers’ understanding of the trio.

Zendaya has also explained that the three-way kiss was performed in one shot. That made the sequence considerably more difficult than a series of separately filmed close-ups.

During the take, the actors had to deliver a line, reach the correct positions, respond to one another physically, and remain aligned with the moving camera. If one person missed a cue or the camera failed to arrive at the necessary position, the sequence had to be started again. There was no convenient reset between every emotional or physical beat.

It has the precision of a dance or a piece of stage blocking, but the actors’ reactions unfold continuously. A movement can feel sudden because it happens inside an uninterrupted take, even though the performers and crew have rehearsed the timing.
It also makes the scene a feat of ensemble coordination. The camera is not simply recording three actors from a fixed position; it is part of the choreography. Every shift in the actors’ bodies has to remain readable, photographable, and safe while preserving the sense that the characters are responding to one another rather than executing a mechanical routine.
Challengers is sexually charged, but it does not center explicit onscreen sex
The marketing image of the three characters on a bed and the film’s reputation for erotic tension can lead viewers to expect a conventional explicit-sex sequence. That is not what the available coverage describes. The film’s sexual charge is expressed primarily through kissing, bodies, glances, rivalry, physical proximity, and the characters’ constantly shifting power.
The movie follows Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy whose playing career ends after a knee injury. She becomes the coach and wife of Art Donaldson, played by Mike Faist. Patrick Zweig, played by Josh O’Connor, is Art’s former best friend and Tashi’s former lover. When Art and Patrick meet across the net at a Challenger-level tournament, their old romantic and competitive tensions return.
That setup is why the film’s eroticism cannot be separated from its tennis. The court is where desire becomes competition, and competition becomes a form of physical communication. O’Connor summarized the idea bluntly in an earlier interview: “the tennis is the sex.” Guadagnino likewise accepted the interpretation that the tennis sequences function as the movie’s sex scenes.
In other words, the hotel-room sequence is one expression of the triangle’s desire, but it is not the film’s only—or even necessarily its primary—erotic language. The rallies, eye contact, aggression, exhaustion, and attempts to dominate one another carry much of the same emotional charge.

The cast trained together before filming
The chemistry in the intimate scenes was supported by preparation that began well before the actors were asked to perform them. Zendaya, Faist, and O’Connor spent weeks training and rehearsing together in Boston. Brad Gilbert worked with the production on the tennis, and the cast developed the physical vocabulary needed to make the players look credible.
That shared training served two purposes. It helped the actors perform the sport, but it also gave them a common physical and emotional language. They had to understand not only how to swing a racquet, but how Tashi, Art, and Patrick read one another’s movements, compete for control, and carry years of history into every interaction.

GQ reported that Zendaya was attentive to details such as calluses, damaged feet, and athletic injuries. Those choices kept the characters from looking like fashion-editorial versions of tennis players. The same attention to physical specificity strengthens the intimate material: these are bodies shaped by sport, injury, fatigue, and competition, not generic romantic archetypes.
The hotel-room costume also carries character information. GQ reported that Zendaya wore a pink Juicy Couture jacket, chosen to suggest what Tashi might put on after returning from tennis in the mid-2000s. Zendaya said she had owned Juicy Couture tracksuits herself, giving the styling a period-specific personal reference rather than treating the outfit as an arbitrary sexy costume.
The churro anecdote is a different kind of improvisation
Interviews with the cast have also mentioned an unscripted churro scene. That anecdote should not be confused with the hotel-room kiss. The churro moment is a separate example of an unexpected or improvised production detail; it is not evidence that the intimate sequence was wholly invented on set.
The distinction reflects a broader point about film production. A scene can contain an unscripted gesture, a spontaneous reaction, or actor-generated movement while still depending on extensive rehearsal and a fixed technical plan. “Improvised” can describe one beat without describing the entire scene.

Where the film’s intimacy ultimately comes from
Challengers makes its central triangle feel intimate because the characters know one another’s bodies, ambitions, weaknesses, and tells. Tashi’s relationship with Art and Patrick is simultaneously romantic, strategic, and adversarial. The actors’ preparation allowed that history to register in both the bedroom and the stadium.
