At trial, Hughes testified that he killed Parcell because he believed her daughter was being abused. That was Hughes’s account of his motive—not a finding that the allegations were true or that the killing was justified.
What happened in the case?
Christina Parcell was found murdered in her home in Greenville County in 2021. The case was tried in Greenville County Circuit Court. On February 20, 2025, a jury found Hughes guilty of murder, and he received a life sentence. The Associated Press reported the verdict and sentence; the South Carolina appellate case page lists the case as The State v. Zachary D. Hughes, filed February 26, 2025.
Why did Hughes say he killed Parcell?
Hughes testified that he believed Parcell’s daughter was at risk of abuse and said that belief was why he killed Parcell. The allegation was Hughes’s stated motive; it should not be confused with a conclusion established in the murder case.
The Associated Press reported that the judge ruled the alleged abuse irrelevant to the killing and barred the defense from presenting it as a justification at trial. The available reporting does not provide the full transcript or written ruling.

What did Hughes’s testimony lead authorities to do?
According to the Associated Press, Hughes’s testimony led authorities to arrest and charge John Mello in connection with Parcell’s killing. Those are charges, not a conviction; the reporting cited here does not establish their outcome.
What is known about the appeal?
The South Carolina appellate court’s public case page lists Hughes’s appeal with “Initial Briefing” status. The page warns that its displayed information should not be relied on as an official record of court action, and its status may change. A current docket check is needed before treating that description as the appeal’s present status.

What the verdict establishes—and what it does not
The jury’s verdict establishes that Hughes was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. His explanation for the killing remains his account of motive; the abuse allegation was not a justification accepted by the judge for presentation in the murder trial. Prosecutor Walt Wilkins told the Associated Press after the trial: “I’ve never had a defendant get on the stand with the kind of attitude, ego, cold-faced sternness and explain a brutal murder in the way he did. It shook me a little bit.”
