How Hofmann and Bryan came to record it together
In a December 18, 2024 interview with the Recording Academy, Hofmann said she posted an early performance of “Purple Gas” on TikTok, and Bryan shared her video. He then invited her to record the song for The Belting Bronco, his acoustic video series, and later asked her to record it as a duet for his next album. Hofmann said she did not know the duet would be released as a single until Bryan called to ask about releasing it.
What the song draws on
The Recording Academy interview describes “Purple Gas” as reflecting resignation as well as resilience in rural agricultural communities Hofmann knew growing up and through her ranch-hand work in Manitoba. That context is specific to her experience, not a claim to speak for every rural or agricultural community.

Hofmann connected her work background to her musical ambitions: “It’s always been a North Star, no matter what I’ve been doing,” she said. “The lessons I’ve learned in other jobs and work experience and grit, it’s all connected.” She also described the limits of the examples she saw growing up: “Growing up where I did, there was no real life example of [a music career].”
