Adams said publicly that she was heartbroken and still loved him. Clark has spoken about the relationship only in broad terms. Neither has given a detailed, on-record account of why it ended, and the explanations that circulated at the time came from anonymous sources rather than from either of them.
The timeline
Adams joined season 16 of The Bachelorette after Clare Crawley left the season. She and Clark met on the show, and she gave him the final rose. The couple announced their engagement in December 2020.

On November 22, 2021, ABC News reported that the engagement had ended. The report quoted a representative for Adams confirming that the two were “no longer a couple.” That statement is the only confirmation of the split that came from within the couple’s camp at the time, and it is the one fact in this story that rests on a named, on-the-record source.
ABC’s report also included earlier context. While filming Katie Thurston’s season of The Bachelorette that year, Adams had talked about relationship difficulties. She said the two had needed to remember why they were together after spending time apart, and she described that strain as something couples can go through. ABC presented this as remarks made before the breakup, not as an explanation of it.

What Adams said publicly
On The Men Tell All (December 6, 2021)
During the The Bachelorette: The Men Tell All episode on December 6, 2021, Adams said: “All in all, all I have to say is that I’m heartbroken.” She went on: “But, we tried really hard, and I still love him very much. And I’m not sure what the future holds.” TV Insider reported that she stepped away briefly after those remarks.
On Bachelor Happy Hour (the following day)
The next day, Adams addressed the ended engagement again on the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast. E! reported that she said she was “definitely hanging in there” and that she was not ready to share details.

In a 2023 interview
In a 2023 interview, Adams explained that the public nature of her relationship and breakup had shaped her decision to keep parts of her personal life private. E! quoted her as saying, “And it’s really hard to go through a public breakup as well.”
What Clark has said
E! reported that Clark briefly reflected on the relationship in a September 2023 podcast appearance. He said: “Two good people don’t always make a good relationship, that’s my experience there.” That is the most specific thing he has said on the record about the relationship that this coverage identifies. It is a general observation, not a description of a particular disagreement, event or cause, and it should not be read as one.

What is known about the reason, and what is not
No source identified here establishes a definitive private reason for the split. The explanations that did circulate were attributed to unnamed sources. TV Insider relayed claims that the pair had trouble finding time together and differed in how comfortable they were with public attention. Those claims were not confirmed by Adams or Clark, and they should be presented as anonymous-source reporting.
The earlier remarks about time apart and strain, reported by ABC, are real and on the record. They still do not explain why the engagement ended, and they should not be used as proof of a cause.

How to read coverage of this split
Most articles about this breakup combine three different kinds of material. The table below separates them.
| Source and date | Who is speaking | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| ABC News, November 22, 2021 | A representative for Adams, quoted by ABC | The engagement had ended; the two were “no longer a couple.” | Any reason for the split |
| ABC News, November 2021 (earlier-in-year remarks) | Adams, on the Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous podcast | She said they had needed to remember why they were together after time apart. | That this strain caused the breakup |
| TV Insider, December 2021 | Adams, on The Men Tell All (December 6, 2021) | She was heartbroken, still loved him, and was unsure about the future. | Anything about private circumstances |
| E!, December 2021 | Adams, on Bachelor Happy Hour | She was “hanging in there” and not ready to share details. | Any specific cause |
| E!, 2023 | Adams, in an interview | She has chosen to keep some of her personal life private after a public breakup. | Any detail of the split itself |
| E!, September 2023 | Clark, on a podcast | His general view that two good people do not always make a good relationship. | A specific disagreement or event |
| TV Insider (citing unnamed sources) | Unnamed sources | Reported claims about scheduling and differing comfort with publicity. | Confirmation from Adams or Clark |
Two practical rules follow from this. Attribute any scheduling or compatibility explanation to its anonymous source. And treat an E! or TV Insider paraphrase as a secondary report of what was said, not as a fresh statement from either person.

What remains open
The reporting reviewed here does not establish a current relationship status for either person beyond the November 2021 statement and the later retrospective remarks listed above. Clark’s most recent on-record comment identified here dates to September 2023. Anyone repeating the story should avoid filling that gap with speculation about the private circumstances of the split.
