Beijing police said actor and singer Yu Menglong died in an accidental fall after drinking and that their investigation ruled out criminal suspicion. Allegations of assault, a cover-up and political protection circulated online, but the public evidence summarized by reliable reporting does not independently establish those claims—or provide the underlying records needed to reconstruct the fall.

What happened to Yu Menglong?

Yu Menglong (于朦胧), also known as Alan Yu, was a Chinese actor and singer. He died in Beijing on September 11, 2025, aged 37. Beijing Chaoyang police publicly described his death as an accidental fall after drinking and said they had ruled out criminal suspicion. That is the publicly reported police conclusion, not an independently published forensic reconstruction.

What did police say their investigation found?

The Paper’s September 21, 2025 report reproduced a notice attributed to the Beijing Chaoyang Public Security Bureau. According to that notice, police began investigating immediately and conducted a scene examination, forensic examination, interviews and a review of surveillance video. Police said they ruled out criminal suspicion, informed the family of their findings, and that the family had no objection.

The notice’s reproduced Chinese wording says authorities “排除刑事案件嫌疑” — they ruled out criminal suspicion. The English rendering of the full statement is: “After the incident in which Yu fell to his death accidentally after drinking, public security authorities immediately began an investigation, conducting an on-site examination, forensic examination, interviews, and retrieval of surveillance video; they ruled out criminal suspicion and informed the family of the findings, and the family had no objection.” This is a translation of the notice reproduced by The Paper, not a separately sourced English quotation.

The account describes what police said they did and concluded. The report does not publish the case file, forensic report or surveillance footage, so readers cannot independently examine those materials through that account.

What did Yu’s mother say?

On September 16, 2025, Yu’s management team posted a statement attributed to his mother. As reported by The Straits Times, she said that Yu accidentally fell from a height after drinking and that police had informed her of their findings. This is a family statement relayed through management, rather than a public release of investigative records.

Was Yu Menglong pushed or assaulted?

Police addressed online claims that Yu had been assaulted after being made to drink, tortured and thrown from a building. The notice also described claims that surveillance had been deliberately destroyed and that family members were controlled. Police said three women had fabricated separate claims in these rumor cases, admitted doing so, and faced legal measures, as reported by The Paper and The Straits Times.

Those outcomes establish what police said about the specific cases they described. They do not, by themselves, provide an independently reviewable account of Yu’s death or settle every allegation that circulated online. Equally, the existence of allegations is not evidence that they are true.

Was there a protest in China demanding justice for Yu?

AFP fact-checked a widely shared video presented as footage of a large protest in China over Yu’s death. AFP identified a Sora watermark, distorted faces and incomprehensible Chinese characters, and concluded that the video was AI-generated. It found no evidence that the rally depicted had occurred in China. That finding concerns this specific clip; it does not establish the full scale of public discussion or determine the truth of unrelated claims.

At the time of its October 28, 2025 fact-check, AFP reported that the hashtag “#justiceforyumenglong” had appeared in more than 57,000 TikTok posts. That is a platform count reported at publication, not a current total or a count of verified accounts or people.

What is known about the allegations of political protection?

No source in the public record summarized here independently demonstrates that political protection caused a cover-up. Police rejected specific claims involving an arranged assault and control of family members, but that is the police account; it is not independent proof that a cover-up was impossible. Online suspicion, including suspicion focused on powerful people, likewise does not establish that political protection occurred.

A 2025 China Monitoring Report by Thinking Taiwan described public reactions to Yu’s death as reflecting dissatisfaction with elite impunity and perceived judicial injustice. It reported more than 10 billion views for discussion related to his death. The cited passage does not explain how that figure was counted, so it should be treated as the report’s attributed estimate, not an independently verified measure of audience size or public opinion.

What remains unknown from the available public material?

The published accounts cited here do not include the full case file, surveillance footage or forensic report. Without those materials, readers cannot independently assess the physical evidence or reconstruct the fall from the public reporting alone. This is a limit on what can be established from the available sources; it is not proof of a cover-up.

The clearest way to assess claims about the case is to distinguish who is speaking and what evidence is available: police conclusions, a statement attributed to Yu’s mother, reporting that reproduces or relays those accounts, and anonymous online claims are not interchangeable. AFP’s finding applies to one alleged protest video, not to every claim about the death. Based on the public material cited here, the police conclusion is documented as their conclusion; the allegation of political protection remains unsubstantiated.
