YouTube briefly offered a VHS-style effect on select videos, according to reports from 2013. A tape icon or VHS button in the player activated simulated distortion, screen noise, occasional rolling, and a wobble when playback was paused. The reports do not establish whether the feature is available on YouTube today.
What was YouTube’s VHS simulator?
It was a digital effect in the YouTube player, not a separate product or a change to the video file. In a report published April 15, 2013, BetaNews described an option that made supported clips look as though they were playing from a VHS recorder.
The effect imitated several familiar imperfections of tape playback:
- Image distortion
- Screen noise
- Occasional screen roll
- A wobbling image when playback was paused
The report does not explain how YouTube implemented the simulation, so its technical method is not established.

How did viewers turn it on?
Contemporary descriptions say the control appeared only on select videos. BetaNews described a tape icon beneath a supported video; a 2016 retrospective quoted the instruction, “On select videos, you’ll find a VHS button in the bottom right of the player.” The retrospective is published by Engineering News.
These accounts describe how the historical feature worked, not a reliable way to activate it now. They do not identify which videos supported the button or confirm that it remains in current YouTube players. No physical VCR or tape was needed for the digital effect.

Why did YouTube add it?
BetaNews reported that YouTube introduced the mode in celebration of what it described as the 57th birthday of the first commercial video cassette recorder, identified in the article as the Ampex VRX-1000. Those anniversary details are the report’s framing.
BetaNews quoted YouTube: “Not too long ago, the video tape was the media of choice for living rooms around the world. In celebration of the 57th birthday of the first commercial video cassette recorder, check out a fun VHS mode for the YouTube player to relive the magic feel of vintage video tapes”. The statement is attributed to YouTube by BetaNews; the available account does not identify an individual speaker or link to the original announcement.
