Reports that YouTube’s classic mobile mini-player is returning apply, at most, to some users: a May 2026 TechYorker search result described an inconsistent return, but the page could not be verified, and YouTube has not confirmed a mobile rollback in the reviewed sources. YouTube’s official help page explains the desktop miniplayer, not a change to the mobile app.
What “classic mini-player” means
In this report, “classic” refers to the earlier mobile-app layout: a small video window above the app’s bottom bar. The redesigned mobile player was described as a floating window that could be moved between screen corners. These are descriptions of mobile layouts, not the desktop miniplayer documented by YouTube.
Android Authority reported on November 14, 2024 that some users said the earlier layout had returned after YouTube app version 19.45.36. The article framed the change tentatively; it is historical reporting, not an official YouTube announcement or proof of what users see now. A separate May 2026 TechYorker search result said the classic player was returning for some accounts and that the situation was inconsistent, but the page could not be checked.
Is the classic layout back on your phone?
The available evidence does not establish that YouTube has restored the classic mobile mini-player broadly, nor does it show that any particular account should have it. Availability by account, app version, operating system, and region remains unverified. None of the reviewed sources documents a universal switch or reliable procedure for restoring the older layout.

A Reddit post surfaced the question, “Does anybody know why the mini player is suddenly gone?” That captures a user’s concern, but a single post does not establish how widespread the issue is. Likewise, Android Authority’s embedded poll found that 75% of 839 respondents preferred the classic version over the redesigned floating PiP version; that was a self-selected publication poll, not a representative survey of YouTube users.

The descriptions distinguish placement, but the reviewed sources do not provide reliable current measurements of how much browsing space either layout occupies or establish a universal way to move, dismiss, or switch between them.

What YouTube officially documents on desktop
YouTube Help describes a desktop miniplayer that keeps a video playing while you browse YouTube. To open it, right-click the video and select Miniplayer. You can pause or play, choose another video from Home, drag the player to any of the four corners, resize or dismiss it, and expand back to the watch page. YouTube says the feature is unavailable for Shorts and videos marked made for kids.
Those instructions apply to the desktop feature. They do not confirm that YouTube has rolled back its mobile design or provide a mobile restore setting.
