The system uses account-related signals to estimate whether a user is under or over 18; it is not the same as asking every user to submit an ID, and YouTube’s announcement did not establish a worldwide rollout. The distinction matters as regulators and governments pursue separate policies for protecting minors online.
Is YouTube using AI to check your age?
Yes. On July 29, 2025, YouTube said it would start rolling machine-learning age estimation out to a small set of US users over the following weeks. The company said it had used the approach in other markets, but did not name them or publish a current country-by-country deployment map. It described monitoring the US rollout before considering broader expansion. YouTube’s announcement is the source for those details.
The system estimates whether an account belongs to someone under or over 18, regardless of the birthday recorded on the account. YouTube Director of Product Management James Beser wrote: “We will use AI to interpret a variety of signals that help us to determine whether a user is over or under 18.” The company identified search types, categories of videos watched, and account longevity as signals. YouTube has not published an accuracy rate for the model.
What happens if YouTube estimates you are a teen?
YouTube said an account identified as belonging to a teen could receive several protections:

YouTube also said age-restricted content would be available only to users it infers or verifies are adults. These are the measures described in the company’s July 2025 announcement; the post does not specify every operational detail of how they are applied.
Will YouTube ask you for ID?
Not necessarily. Estimation and verification are separate steps: the model first makes an inference from account-related signals. If it wrongly estimates that an adult is under 18, YouTube said the person can verify they are at least 18, for example using a credit card or government ID. Google’s broader US explanation of age assurance also lists a selfie as a possible way to correct an estimate, but that describes Google services generally and should not be assumed to be an available option in every YouTube flow. Google’s age-assurance information covers that broader approach.

Estimation relies on signals associated with an account; verification involves presenting additional proof. The July YouTube post names possible verification methods but does not set out a single method that every user must use or specify a universal retention policy for submitted proof.
Is YouTube’s AI age check happening worldwide?
The available announcement does not support that conclusion. YouTube said the model had been used in other markets, but it did not identify those markets or say that the system was available everywhere. Its July 2025 statement described a small US rollout followed by monitoring, not a global launch. Availability may vary by location, and the announcement does not resolve where the system is currently active.

How YouTube’s system differs from government age rules
Platform age estimation, identity checks, and government restrictions are related to online child safety, but they are different measures. An estimate may lead a service to apply protections or invite a user to verify their age. A law or government policy can instead require a service to restrict access or accounts for people below a specified age.
| Measure | What it is | Scope and status in the cited source |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube age estimation | A machine-learning inference using account-related signals to estimate whether a user is under or over 18. | YouTube announced a limited US rollout in July 2025 and said it had used the approach in other, unnamed markets. No country-by-country map was provided. YouTube, July 2025. |
| Age verification | A user supplies additional proof to correct an incorrect estimate or establish that they meet an age threshold. | YouTube gave a credit card or government ID as examples; Google’s broader US account also mentions a selfie. These are not evidence of a single universal flow. Google account information. |
| European Commission inquiry | A regulator requests information about a platform’s age-assurance and recommender systems. | On October 10, 2025, the Commission requested information from YouTube as part of Digital Services Act work on protecting minors. This was scrutiny, not a finding of non-compliance. The notice also named Snapchat, Apple’s App Store, and Google Play. European Commission, October 2025. |
| FTC COPPA policy statement | Conditional enforcement discretion concerning certain age checks by covered services. | In February 2026, the FTC said it would not bring certain enforcement actions against covered general-audience and mixed-audience services that collect, use, or disclose personal information solely to determine age without first obtaining verifiable parental consent, provided they meet stated conditions. It is not a blanket permission or a mandate for every service to check ages. FTC, February 2026. |
| UK under-16 restriction plan | A proposed government restriction on social media use by children under 16. | Associated Press reported on June 15, 2026 that the UK had announced a planned restriction that would include YouTube, expected to start in early 2027, with more details expected later. It is separate from YouTube’s age-estimation system and was a plan at the time of the report. Associated Press, June 2026. |
Why age checks are attracting wider scrutiny
Regulators and governments are approaching the issue through distinct legal and policy routes. The European Commission’s October 2025 request asked YouTube for information about its age-assurance and recommendation systems under its work on protecting minors. It did not announce that YouTube had broken the law. Commission Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen said platforms have an obligation to protect minors, whether through measures in the Commission’s guidelines or equally effective measures of their own choosing.

The FTC’s February 2026 statement concerns a narrower COPPA enforcement question in the United States. Its conditional approach applies to specified covered services and requires safeguards including purpose limitation, prompt deletion, limits on third-party disclosure, clear notice, reasonable security, and reasonable steps to make age determinations accurate. The statement is an enforcement policy, not a requirement that all websites use age checks.
YouTube has separately argued against blanket account bans, advocating tailored tools such as parental controls, restrictions on risky features, privacy-preserving age estimation, and clear content standards. That is the company’s policy position, not a description of what regulators have required. YouTube’s December 2025 post sets out its argument.
