Hulu is a live-TV service plus a streaming bundle
Hulu + Live TV includes more than 100 live channels, Hulu’s on-demand catalog, Disney+, and ESPN Select plus additional ESPN Unlimited content through the ESPN app. The bundle also includes unlimited DVR at no extra charge. Most new Hulu episodes are available the day after broadcast, although programming rights and specific shows can change that timing.
This is the more compelling package if your household already pays for Hulu, Disney+, and sports access separately. It can also be the better choice for people who alternate between live channels and a deep on-demand catalog: one subscription covers current television, Hulu originals, Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and ESPN content.
There is one important distinction in older comparisons: Hulu’s unlimited DVR is no longer an optional Enhanced Cloud DVR feature. Unlimited DVR became standard in 2022. Hulu recordings can generally be fast-forwarded through commercials, but they are retained for up to nine months, whereas YouTube TV’s DVR is generally less restrictive about storage duration.
Channel count is not a useful final answer
Both services advertise more than 100 channels, but the number alone will not tell you which one works at your address. Local affiliates, regional sports networks, plan variations, add-ons, device restrictions, and rights agreements all affect the lineup.
Before subscribing, make a short list of channels you actually watch. Include local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and PBS stations, regional sports networks, national sports channels, news channels, and any documentary or entertainment networks that matter to your household. Then check both services using your ZIP code:
- On Hulu, open the Hulu + Live TV page.
- Find “Channels in your area”.
- Enter your home ZIP code in “Enter your home ZIP code”, then select “SUBMIT.”
- For YouTube TV, go to tv.youtube.com/welcome and enter your home ZIP code to view the available networks and local channels.
This check matters more than a national channel comparison. A service that lacks your local CBS affiliate or regional sports network is not a bargain, even if it lists several more channels overall.

Which service is better for sports?
Neither service automatically solves every sports-rights problem. Hulu + Live TV lists ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN News, ESPN U, FS1, FS2, CBS Sports Network, NFL Network, MLB Network, and other sports channels, subject to location and blackout rules. Its Sports Add-on costs $9.99 per month and includes NFL RedZone plus additional sports networks.

YouTube TV includes national sports networks and local channels, and its Multiview feature can show up to four games at once on supported devices and programming. NFL Sunday Ticket is a separate add-on. Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime is not included with YouTube TV simply because you subscribe to its live-TV plan.
YouTube TV also offers a separate Sports Plan for new subscribers. Google describes it as a lower-priced sports-focused option with sports channels from the main plan plus local channels, unlimited DVR, Multiview, family sharing, and the same concurrent-stream limits. Its price and exact lineup should be checked at signup, rather than copied from an older comparison.
For sports, compare the specific league and game—not just the word “sports.” Blackouts and exclusive deals can send a game to a local station, a regional network, ESPN, a league service, Amazon Prime, or another provider.

YouTube TV has the simpler DVR policy. Add a program to your library and recordings are stored without a conventional capacity limit. Recorded programs can generally be fast-forwarded through commercials.
Hulu also provides unlimited DVR in its standard Live TV plans. Recordings can be fast-forwarded and remain available for up to nine months. However, Hulu’s DVR does not remove advertising from on-demand shows. If Hulu supplies an on-demand version instead of the recording you expected, that version may contain unskippable ads.
The same general trap exists on YouTube TV: an on-demand version can have advertising even when you have added the program to your library. A recording may not appear until the program has actually aired live. For viewers who regularly record documentaries, news specials, or live events, check that you are watching the recorded version rather than an on-demand replacement.
Sharing and simultaneous streams
YouTube TV is more generous without an add-on. The standard plan supports three simultaneous devices and up to six personal accounts for one household membership. Family-group members are expected to primarily live in the same household and must periodically use YouTube TV from the home location.

That difference is easy to feel in a busy home. A person watching a live news channel, another watching sports, and a third watching a recorded program can use YouTube TV’s standard allowance. The same combination may exceed Hulu’s two-screen limit.

Travel and location restrictions
YouTube TV separates your Home area from your Current playback area. When traveling within the United States, it supplies local channels for the current location. You cannot simply watch your home-area local stations as though you were still at home.
To update YouTube TV’s current playback area, select your profile photo, choose Location, select Update next to Current playback area, and, if prompted, visit tv.youtube.com/verify to allow location access. To change the home area on the web, use the same Profile photo > Location > Update path next to Home area.

YouTube TV is unavailable internationally, and VPNs or proxies can interfere with playback and location verification. Frequent travelers should use the service in the home area at least once every three months. MLB viewers should check in at home at least once every 30 days to reduce MLB-related viewing restrictions.
Hulu also requires location data for Live TV. Local and regional availability, blackouts, device rules, and changing rights agreements can affect what you see away from home. Neither service should be chosen on the assumption that a particular local station works everywhere.
Which one is better for ad-free viewing?
Hulu’s $99.99 Premium + Live TV plan removes ads from the Hulu streaming library and Disney+. It does not make live television ad-free, and live-TV video-on-demand content still includes ads. Some live or linear programming can also contain advertising even with the premium plan.
YouTube TV’s live channels contain normal television advertising. Its DVR is the practical way to skip commercials, but on-demand versions may not allow fast-forwarding. If “ad-free” mainly means watching Hulu originals and Disney+ films without interruptions, Hulu Premium is the relevant option. If it means skipping commercials in recorded live programs, both services can work.
Add-ons can change the calculation
Hulu lists several optional packages, including the Sports Add-on at $9.99 per month, Entertainment at $7.99, Español at $4.99, HBO Max at $10.99, Cinemax at $9.99, Paramount+ with SHOWTIME at $13.99, and STARZ at $11.99. Unlimited Screens is also available for an additional charge, though its price may not be displayed in every public plan section.
YouTube TV offers add-ons and plan combinations including 4K Plus, NFL Sunday Ticket, premium networks, and the Sports Plan. Prices and availability can vary, especially if you are billed through a mobile carrier or internet provider rather than directly through Google.
Do the arithmetic using the package you would really buy. A cheaper base plan can lose its advantage after sports, premium networks, or extra-screen fees are added. Conversely, Hulu’s higher entry price may be lower than paying separately for Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN access.
