YouTube’s built-in A/B testing tool lets eligible creators compare up to three title options, thumbnail options, or combinations of both in YouTube Studio on a computer. To use it, open a video, choose A/B testing in the title or thumbnail area, select what to test, add alternatives, and click Done. YouTube determines the result using watch time—not click-through rate alone.
Check whether your video can be tested
According to YouTube Help’s feature guidance reviewed on October 3, 2026, the tool requires advanced features to be enabled and is available through YouTube Studio on desktop. Eligibility also depends on the video’s format, audience settings, and privacy status.
- Not eligible: Shorts, scheduled live streams, Premiere videos while they are still Premieres, Made for Kids videos, mature-audience videos, and private videos.
- Eligible after a format change: An archived live stream can be tested. A Premiere can be tested after it ends and converts to a long-form video.
- Check age restrictions carefully: YouTube warns that failing to mark age-restricted content correctly when using the tool can result in losing access to the feature.
If you do not see the control, first confirm that you are using Studio on a computer, advanced features are enabled, and the video meets the eligibility rules.
Start a title test in YouTube Studio
- Open the video. For a new upload, start at Create and upload the video. For a published video, open Content and select it.
- Open the testing control. In the video’s editing details, click A/B testing in the Title box or beneath Thumbnail.
- Choose what to compare. Select Title only, Thumbnail only, or Title and thumbnail. For a title-focused test, choose Title only if you want the thumbnail held constant; choose the combined option if you want to compare complete title-and-thumbnail packages.
- Add alternatives. Enter up to three variations, then click Done. YouTube tests the submitted versions with viewers concurrently.
- Leave the tested elements unchanged while it runs. If you change the tested title or thumbnail during the test, YouTube says the test stops automatically. To continue testing, you must restart it.
Choose alternatives that can teach you something
YouTube recommends using diverse alternatives rather than near-identical versions. If the options are too similar, they may not produce enough difference for YouTube to declare a winner, and the test can take longer to resolve. The alternatives should accurately represent the same video; a title that attracts clicks but misleads viewers is not a useful improvement.

YouTube also recommends starting with older videos to reduce the possible effect of testing on overall channel views. The number of impressions, how recently the video was published, and other factors affect how long the comparison takes. A video with too few impressions may not provide enough evidence for a conclusive result.
Track the test and allow time for a result
YouTube’s guidance is that a test may take a few days and should complete within two weeks. That is guidance, not a guaranteed finish time for every video. You can review results on the video’s Details page or in Analytics under the Reach tab; an active test can also be managed there.

Understand what the result means
The native tool chooses based on watch-time performance. YouTube’s stated rationale is that titles and thumbnails should help viewers understand a video and avoid clicks that waste their time. A higher click-through rate by itself therefore does not establish that a title is the native test winner.
- Winner: YouTube identifies the strongest-performing tested option according to its watch-time objective.
- Performed the same: The tested options did not produce a meaningful difference under the tool’s evaluation.
- Inconclusive: The result does not establish a clear winner. YouTube notes that insufficient impressions or similar alternatives can make a clear result difficult. A control group may also be excluded from the calculation.
If there is no clear winner, YouTube says the first submitted title or title-and-thumbnail combination is shown to all viewers. You can still manually change the title or thumbnail afterward. Treat an inconclusive result as a limit on what this test established, not proof that all options will perform identically in every future audience.

Native YouTube testing versus outside tests
YouTube describes its own tests as concurrent: viewers see the alternatives during the same period. It says third-party tests may instead be sequential and may optimize for click-through rate alone, so their results can differ from a native test based on watch time. This is YouTube’s description of the distinction; it is not an independent evaluation of every external testing service.
Troubleshooting: why the test may be unavailable or stop
- No A/B testing control: Use YouTube Studio on a computer, verify advanced features are enabled, and check that the video is not a Short, scheduled live stream, active Premiere, Made for Kids, mature-audience, or private video.
- The video is a Premiere: Wait until the Premiere ends and converts to a long-form video, then check eligibility again.
- The test stopped after an edit: Changing the tested title or thumbnail ends the run. Set up and start the test again if you want to compare the variations.
- The test is taking longer than expected: YouTube says timing depends partly on impressions and publication recency. Its few-days-to-two-weeks guidance is not a fixed deadline.
- No winner appears: Similar alternatives or insufficient impressions may leave the result inconclusive. Review the reported outcome, then make a manual choice if needed.
- A repeat test gives a different result: YouTube notes that real-world data and audience composition can vary between runs.
