YouTube Stream Key Not Saving in OBS Studio: Settings to Check

If OBS Studio appears to forget your YouTube stream key, check the active Profile and OBS launch location first. If the key remains but OBS will not connect, verify the server URL and RTMPS setup.

If OBS Studio seems to forget your YouTube stream key, first check the active OBS Profile and confirm you are launching the same OBS installation each time. A key that is still present after restarting OBS but will not connect is a different problem: verify the YouTube server URL and connection protocol as well as the key.

First, work out whether OBS forgot the settings or cannot connect

Open OBS and go to Settings > Stream. Check whether the YouTube service, server and key are still selected.

  • Server or key is missing or different: check the active Profile and how OBS is launched.
  • Server and key are present, but OBS will not connect: verify the current YouTube URL, key and RTMPS setup rather than repeatedly pasting the same key.

YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key identifies and authorizes the stream; the server URL tells OBS where to send it. Both settings matter.

Check the active OBS Profile

OBS Profiles save streaming settings, including the connected account, along with Video and Output settings. If you have more than one Profile, each can have its own stream configuration. Switching Profiles can therefore make a saved YouTube setup appear to have vanished.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Open the Profile menu in OBS.
  2. Select the Profile where you configured YouTube.
  3. Open Settings > Stream and check the service, server and key.

Profiles do not store scenes; Scene Collections are separate. If you want a portable backup of a working Profile, OBS supports exporting Profiles to JSON. See the OBS Project’s Profiles documentation.

Confirm OBS is launching from the same place

This check is especially relevant if you use Portable Mode on Windows. Portable Mode loads OBS configuration from the application folder. If a shortcut opens another OBS installation or a different portable folder, you may see different settings on different launches.

  1. Check the shortcut or launch method you use each time and confirm it points to the same OBS copy.
  2. If you use Portable Mode, confirm you are opening the same application folder that contains its configuration.
  3. If you are installing or moving a portable copy, OBS recommends unzipping the Windows ZIP in a user folder and advises against using Program Files.

Portable Mode changes where configuration is read from; its use alone does not establish why a setting might fail to save. For details, see the OBS Project’s Running in Portable Mode guide.

Re-enter the current YouTube server and stream key

If the key is missing, or you want to verify the destination, copy the current stream details from YouTube Studio and check both fields in OBS.

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open the Stream tab.
  2. Copy the current stream key and note the server URL shown for the stream.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose the YouTube service or preset when available, then verify the server/URL and stream key fields.
  4. Apply the settings and check that they remain in the intended Profile.

YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to find the server URL and stream key. OBS distinguishes a missing server URL from a missing key, so check both rather than treating them as one setting.

Reset the key only when you need a fresh one

If the key is rejected, missing, or may have been exposed, a channel owner or manager can retrieve or reset it in YouTube Live Control Room. Editors and viewers cannot reset it. After a reset, replace the old key in OBS with the new one; the old value will no longer work for that encoder setup.

If the key is saved but OBS cannot connect

When the settings remain in the correct Profile after an OBS restart, focus on the connection details. A retained key does not prove that the URL, protocol or encoder connection is correct.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Check the server and protocol: use a YouTube RTMPS preset in OBS if one is available, or copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. YouTube explains the setup in its RTMPS encryption guidance.
  • If OBS reports an SSL error: confirm the server address and scheme are correct. YouTube also suggests trying port 443.
  • If the connection times out: check for an incorrect URL or an encoder that does not support RTMPS.
  • Test before the event: YouTube recommends testing the setup and monitoring stream health rather than waiting until you are live.

For video output settings such as bitrate, resolution and keyframes, use YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance; changing those values does not replace checking the server URL and key when the connection itself is failing.
