OBS showing “connected” does not necessarily mean your YouTube event is live. First check that Live Control Room is open to the intended event; for a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube’s workflow is to wait for its preview and then click Go live, unless auto-start is enabled. If there is no preview, verify the destination and current stream key before changing encoding settings.
Start with the YouTube event, not OBS settings
Treat OBS’s connected indicator as encoder-side status, not proof that the selected YouTube event has been published. YouTube’s documented scheduled-stream workflow separates receiving the feed from starting the event: the preview should appear in Live Control Room, and you then select Go live unless auto-start is enabled. - Open Live Control Room and confirm it is showing the event you intend to broadcast—not another scheduled stream.
- Look for the incoming preview. If it appears but the event remains offline, select Go live, unless that event is configured to start automatically.
- After starting, check the event’s watch page or channel page to confirm the viewer-facing stream is accessible.
The available YouTube guidance explains the event workflow, but does not define precisely what OBS’s “connected” label means internally. The practical distinction is that an encoder status alone does not verify that YouTube has started the intended event.
If Live Control Room has no preview
Confirm the destination URL and stream key
In OBS, check the YouTube server or stream URL and stream key against the values shown for the intended stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room settings. A stream key routes the encoder feed to YouTube and allows YouTube to accept it. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private. - Make sure OBS is sending to the same stream whose settings you are inspecting.
- Check that the server/URL and key were copied correctly, without extra spaces or a stale key.
- If you recently reset the key, update OBS before trying again.
Once the destination is confirmed, give YouTube’s Live Control Room a moment to show the incoming preview, then use its stream-health status and any accompanying message to guide further checks.
Use stream health to choose the next fix
Live Control Room reports stream health and can show specific errors. YouTube says its Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check the stream being sent for errors. Follow the message attached to this stream rather than changing every encoder setting at once. YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream errors

If the feed appears but is poor, unstable, or unhealthy
YouTube recommends checking the picture and sound from the sources routed to the encoder, looking for encoder errors and high CPU load, and testing outbound internet strength. If the source picture or audio is poor, address the source or routing first. If the feed looks and sounds healthy but the stream drops or struggles, investigate outbound connectivity. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving bandwidth headroom; they do not establish a publication date for that advice, so treat it as general guidance rather than a dated threshold. Check format settings only when the health message or symptoms point to a format problem. YouTube’s error reference identifies mismatches when video is not H.264 or audio is not AAC, and identifies keyframe-frequency mismatches between primary and backup streams. Those are targeted checks, not universal fixes for an offline event. YouTube: Live encoder settings and error messages

- Use a current version of the encoder.
- Inspect encoder logs or status for errors and unusually high CPU load.
- Verify that the intended video and audio sources are reaching the encoder.
- Test outbound internet stability if the local feed is healthy but YouTube reports delivery problems.
- Change codec or keyframe settings only when YouTube’s error points to that setting.
Confirm the stream viewers can actually watch
After the event starts, open its channel or watch page and confirm it is accessible. Keep monitoring stream health during the broadcast; an encoder connection at the start does not guarantee that the public-facing event remains healthy. YouTube: Live streaming tips
When to escalate
If you have confirmed the event, current key, destination, start step, and the relevant health checks but the problem continues, use YouTube’s report-a-problem route or contact the appropriate encoder software support team. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance specifically distinguishes third-party software login without a stream key from encoder streaming with a key; for the symptom here, first verify the key-based destination and the stream’s YouTube-side status.
