1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAfter changing your encoder resolution, first confirm what resolution and frame rate it is actually sending, then check whether your YouTube stream key is set to match. Next, verify the bitrate for the new resolution, frame rate, and codec, followed by encoder and network health. YouTube normally detects incoming settings automatically; a custom stream key can instead use a manually selected resolution. The warning’s exact wording matters, so use it and your encoder’s telemetry to narrow down the cause rather than assuming the resolution change is at fault.
1. Confirm the encoder’s actual output
Check the encoder’s live output resolution and frame rate—not just the project canvas, base resolution, or source clip. Changing one setting does not necessarily change the signal being sent to YouTube. YouTube says Live Control Room detects encoder settings automatically by default. If you use a custom stream key with a manually selected resolution, that selection needs to agree with the encoder’s outgoing signal. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and custom stream key settings.
- Read the encoder’s output or streaming status while it is connected, and note resolution and frame rate.
- In Live Control Room, check whether resolution is automatic or manually configured for the selected custom stream key.
- If manual selection is enabled, select the resolution that matches the encoder output, or restore automatic detection if that is appropriate for your setup.
- Reconnect or restart the stream after changing the key configuration, then check the incoming signal again.
If the encoder is sending a different resolution than you intended, correct the encoder first. If the signal is correct but the key is locked to another resolution, correct that mismatch before changing unrelated settings.
2. Recheck bitrate for the new output
A bitrate that suited your previous output may not suit the new one. YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec; the figures below are recommendations, not guarantees that your encoder or connection can sustain them. These are live-stream settings, not video-upload bitrate targets. The figures are from YouTube’s table as accessed on October 3, 2026; the help page does not state a publication year.

| Codec | Output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
Use the row for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s live encoding recommendations; do not reuse a value simply because it worked at the old resolution. If you use a configuration not shown above, consult the full current table rather than extrapolating from these examples.
3. Check the encoder’s general live settings
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Verify these against the encoder’s streaming output profile and YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Rate control: Use CBR as YouTube recommends, rather than assuming a variable-rate setting will behave the same way.
- Keyframes: Set the interval to two seconds where the encoder exposes it; do not exceed four seconds.
- Codec and frame rate: Confirm the codec and frame rate match the bitrate guidance you chose.
- Resolution: Confirm output dimensions in the active streaming profile, not only in a general video or canvas setting.
HLS is a separate ingestion protocol with additional setup requirements and higher latency than RTMP. It is not a routine first fix for a resolution warning; start by validating the existing encoder output and stream-key configuration. YouTube discusses protocol options in its live encoder guidance.
4. Work out whether the fault is in the encoder or the connection
If the encoder preview or local recording looks wrong
Inspect the source quality, encoder error messages, and CPU load. A soft, stuttering, or otherwise degraded preview or local archive points toward source or encoding issues before it points to YouTube’s connection to your encoder. Lowering the output resolution may reduce encoding demand, but it will not repair a poor source or an overloaded system by itself. YouTube’s encoder recommendations cover setup, and its streaming troubleshooting guidance addresses common problems.

If the encoder output looks healthy but YouTube reports trouble
Check outbound upload stability and the total bitrate of the stream. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That is a recommendation, not a universal measured minimum for every connection. Run an upload test under conditions close to the live event, allowing for other devices and traffic that share the connection. If the test indicates a connection problem, contact your ISP or investigate the network path; a stable wired connection may help with instability, but cannot correct an encoder-to-key resolution mismatch. See YouTube’s streaming tips and troubleshooting steps.
5. Test before making the stream public
After changing settings, run a representative preflight test and watch the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Include the kind of movement and audio the real program will contain; a static desktop may not reveal issues that appear during motion. YouTube specifically advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Monitor stream-health messages during the test and event, and note their exact wording alongside the encoder’s status and output settings. See YouTube’s testing guidance and stream-health troubleshooting.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | What to check first | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Warning appeared immediately after resolution change | Actual encoder output versus the selected resolution on a custom stream key | Match the values or restore automatic detection, reconnect, and inspect the incoming preview. |
| Video is choppy or encoder reports skipped/failed work | Encoder errors, CPU load, and source quality | Address the local encoding or source issue; then test the stream again. |
| Encoder preview looks good, but stream health is poor or intermittent | Outbound upload stability and total stream bitrate | Test the connection, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom, and contact your ISP if the test points to a connection fault. |
| Video quality worsened after raising resolution or frame rate | Whether the bitrate still matches the new codec, resolution, and frame rate | Choose the applicable YouTube live-ingestion recommendation and verify the connection can sustain it. |
| Issue disappears in preview but returns during the program | Whether the test included representative movement and audio | Repeat a preflight with content resembling the live event and monitor stream-health messages. |
Without the literal warning and relevant encoder telemetry, no single cause can be diagnosed responsibly. Treat the on-screen message as the first clue, then follow the matching branch above instead of changing multiple settings at once.
