Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds in the encoder that actually sends your video to YouTube. YouTube recommends a two-second cadence and says not to exceed four seconds. If OBS sends the stream through another encoder or relay, change the setting on the device that sends the final feed to YouTube.
What the missing-keyframes warning means
YouTube’s Live Control Room checks the incoming stream and reports issues beside the stream health indicator. Its error guidance says: “Your encoder is sending keyframes too often or not often enough.” YouTube recommends sending them every two seconds, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Keyframes that arrive too infrequently can cause buffering. YouTube Help: Live streaming error messages.
A keyframe interval is a time cadence, not a universal frame count. At 30 frames per second (fps), a two-second interval equals 60 frames. At a different frame rate, the equivalent number of frames changes; use the seconds setting when available.
Fix the interval in OBS or the final encoder
- Identify what sends the stream to YouTube. If OBS connects directly to YouTube, use OBS’s active streaming encoder settings. If OBS feeds a separate encoder or relay that then sends the stream to YouTube, the downstream device is the one to check.
- Open the active streaming encoder’s output settings. Find the control labelled Keyframe Interval or its encoder-specific equivalent. Set it to 2 seconds. Check the units shown by the control: some encoders express the interval in seconds, while others may use frames.
- Apply the setting to the correct output. OBS can use different encoders or output modes. Make sure you have changed the encoder used for streaming, not a recording-only setting.
- Start a test stream and check stream health. Confirm that YouTube no longer reports the cadence warning. Test before an event, then keep an eye on stream health messages while live.
The OBS Project’s advanced recording settings guide, dated November 30, 2023, lists a keyframe interval of 2 in several encoder examples. That guide covers recording settings; it does not establish one streaming-menu path for every OBS version and encoder. Look for the interval control in the streaming encoder you have selected, and verify the result in YouTube.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the warning remains
- Check the last device in the stream path. A downstream encoder or relay may override OBS’s settings. Set the cadence on the device that actually sends video to YouTube.
- Confirm the value and units. Ensure the active streaming output is set to a two-second interval, not a frame value mistakenly treated as seconds or vice versa.
- Check for ingestion problems. YouTube cautions that ingestion errors can result in incorrect GOP sizes, so a frequency warning may not be caused only by the configured encoder interval. Inspect the encoder and the path carrying the stream to YouTube if the setting is already correct.
- Retest and read the current health messages. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health; use the messages shown for your stream to identify any remaining issue.
Related encoder settings to check
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose the relevant value in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. YouTube also advises choosing a quality that suits the available upload connection.
HLS is a separate streaming setup with its own segment and protocol requirements. YouTube documents OBS as an HLS-capable encoder and describes those requirements in its HLS ingestion guidance. Switching to HLS is not necessary to fix the ordinary keyframe-frequency warning.
