If YouTube says your encoder is not sending enough data, do not assume FFmpeg needs -re. YouTube’s health description is “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming,” and that warning signals an interruption in delivery—not its cause. Check the detailed Live Control Room error, FFmpeg’s reported speed, your stream settings, and upload capacity before changing flags.
What the warning means—and what it does not
YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes this health state as “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.” It tells you that video is not arriving continuously enough; it does not say whether the problem is insufficient upload capacity, unsuitable stream settings, or an encoder that cannot keep up with real time. The exact warning and the evidence from your stream determine what to fix. See YouTube’s health-status descriptions.
Do not treat every warning as a pacing problem. YouTube reports distinct issues for bitrate, codec, resolution, audio/video settings, and keyframe frequency. A keyframe or codec error calls for a different correction than an unstable connection. YouTube’s live streaming error messages documentation explains the categories; the Live Control Room also shows a timestamp beside each error, and unresolved errors remain visible.
Diagnose the stream before changing FFmpeg flags
- Read the full Live Control Room message. Note the exact health warning, any additional error text, and its timestamp. Use the specific error category to guide the next check rather than changing several settings at once.
- Check whether FFmpeg is sustaining real time. Inspect its output during the stream. For a live encode, a process that falls behind the input can interrupt delivery even if the command is syntactically valid. Do not assume a hardware bottleneck without evidence such as FFmpeg’s reported encoding speed or machine-specific performance data.
- Verify the stream configuration. Compare the configured video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with the selected YouTube ingest configuration and YouTube’s current encoder guidance. If a specific YouTube error identifies incorrect settings, address that setting directly.
- Test upload capacity against the intended bitrate. YouTube recommends running a speed test and choosing a stream quality that is reliable for the connection. Leave room for network variability; a speed-test result is not a guarantee that the connection will sustain the stream continuously.
- Change one relevant setting, then test again. Use representative movement and audio rather than a static or silent sample. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring stream health during it. If the connection cannot support the chosen resolution, YouTube advises considering a lower one.
When FFmpeg’s -re helps—and when it does not
FFmpeg documents -re as a real-time input read-rate control, equivalent to reading at 1× speed. A prerecorded file can otherwise be read faster than real time; pacing that file can therefore be useful when sending it as a live output. The option controls how quickly FFmpeg reads its input. It does not increase upload bandwidth, correct an unsuitable bitrate or keyframe interval, or make an encoder that cannot sustain real-time processing keep up.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Identify the input type before adding it. FFmpeg cautions against using a low read rate with an actual capture device or live stream. For those sources, a pacing flag is not a general remedy for delivery interruptions. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation and diagnose the source, encoder performance, settings, and network separately.
Check codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options; frame rates up to 60 fps; and CBR bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum of four seconds. For audio, it lists AAC or MP3; AAC is required for 5.1 surround audio over RTMP/RTMPS. Match settings to the codec, resolution, frame rate, and connection you actually use rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream.

These examples are YouTube’s published recommended ingestion bitrates, not guaranteed upload-speed requirements or universal quality targets:
| Codec | Resolution and frame rate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
Use YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the applicable codec and stream format. If the actual warning concerns keyframes, check the GOP interval against YouTube’s two-second recommendation and four-second maximum. Do not change the GOP just because a general “not enough video” health state appears; first establish that keyframe frequency is the reported issue.

Common causes and the next useful check
- Bitrate exceeds what the connection can sustain: test upload capacity, compare it with the configured bitrate, and try a lower bitrate or resolution if needed.
- FFmpeg falls behind: observe its reported encoding speed during the live encode. Investigate the actual source and machine performance rather than assuming a specific hardware fault.
- Wrong codec, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval: use YouTube’s detailed error category and current ingest guidance to correct the identified setting.
- A pacing flag was added to the wrong kind of input: distinguish a prerecorded file from a live capture source.
-recan pace file reading; it is not a universal repair for a live source or network congestion.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery can resume the stream if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting from a camera, and streams to YouTube only. Learn more at StreamNeo.
