Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can you run a 24/7 YouTube livestream using prerecorded videos? YouTube’s official guidance does not grant blanket advance approval for every continuous prerecorded stream, nor does it categorically ban them. Your channel must qualify to livestream, the full stream must comply with YouTube policies and rights requirements, and monetization is assessed separately at the channel level. There is also a practical catch: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived.
What YouTube’s rules mean for a continuous prerecorded stream
YouTube’s livestream guidance sets eligibility and content requirements, but it does not provide a specific advance ruling for every 24/7 loop of prerecorded video. Whether your particular stream complies depends on its content, rights, your channel history, and—if you seek monetization—your channel’s overall originality and value.
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had a livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s livestreaming eligibility guidance.
- Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
- You need the necessary rights for the live content, including music rights, for worldwide use on Google services. YouTube’s Terms of Service also refer to complying with applicable laws and required clearances in the stream territory.
- Meeting livestream eligibility does not guarantee that the stream will be archived or that the channel will qualify for monetization.
Rights and copyright checks apply throughout the stream
Do not assume that owning a video file, finding footage online, or having permission to use a piece of music automatically clears every right needed for an all-day broadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have all necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of the live content on Google services, including relevant rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants.
YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If its systems detect third-party material, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop showing it. If the material remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream; a copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also result in termination. See YouTube’s livestream copyright guidance.

If you have a licence for third-party material
YouTube advises creators to ask the rights owner to add their channel to the owner’s Content ID allowlist. Without that allowlisting, a stream may still be interrupted even if you have a licence. Allowlisting does not replace the need to ensure that your licence covers the content, uses, territories, and duration involved.
Check the whole programme, not only the main video
- Confirm rights for every video, music track, image, clip, and other third-party element in the stream.
- Check that permissions cover livestreaming, the relevant territories, and any planned replay or archive use.
- If a rights holder uses Content ID and has licensed the material to you, ask whether they can allowlist your channel.
- Keep records of licences and permissions so you can respond if a rights or Content ID issue arises.
Monetization is a separate channel-level review
YouTube’s channel monetization policy applies to videos, including livestreams, and reviewers assess the channel as a whole. They may consider its theme, most-viewed and newest videos, the material contributing the largest share of watch time, metadata, and the About section. Monetized content should be original and not mass-produced, generic, repetitive, or manipulative. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Reused-content eligibility is distinct from copyright permission. YouTube says reused content is material repurposed from YouTube or another online source without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. Its policy states: “This policy applies even if you have permission from the original creator.” A channel can therefore fail the reused-content monetization policy without receiving a copyright claim.
On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified that it had renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” to describe the existing rule against repetitive or mass-produced material; it stated that the reused-content policy had not changed. A continuous stream of material you are entitled to show is not, by that fact alone, assured monetization eligibility. Consider what original contribution and value your channel provides across its content.

Plan around the 12-hour archive limitation
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its guidance is explicit: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. Read YouTube’s livestream archive guidance.
| Format | Archive consideration | Viewer continuity | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|---|
| One uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours | YouTube warns it may not be captured at all. | Fewer planned transitions, though interruptions can still occur. | Keep a local recording if you need a replay, and have a way to restart after interruptions. |
| Shorter sessions, each under 12 hours | YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; archiving is not guaranteed. | Session transitions introduce breaks in continuity. | Schedule transitions and keep local backups. Splitting a stream is not a guarantee that YouTube will process every archive. |
The 12-hour guidance concerns archiving, not permission to stream. Shortening sessions does not settle copyright or monetization questions, and it does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery.

Starting a prerecorded stream with an encoder
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe connecting an encoder to YouTube with a stream URL and stream key, then starting the stream from the encoder. Its live-stream tips identify software encoding programs as one way to broadcast. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not prescribe a computer model or minimum hardware specification for unattended streaming. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and livestreaming tips.
- Confirm eligibility and prepare the content. Check that the channel is verified and has had no livestream restriction in the past 90 days. Review the full playlist for policy compliance and rights, including music and third-party clips.
- Create or schedule the YouTube livestream. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live and set up the stream. Choose its title, description, audience setting, and visibility carefully; do not imply that prerecorded material is a real-time event if that would mislead viewers.
- Connect the encoder. In the YouTube live control room, copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP destination settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with an untrusted person. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Configure playback and continuity. Load the prerecorded video or playlist in the encoder and enable looping if that is the intended format. Confirm that playback continues after the first file ends and decide how you will detect a stopped encoder or lost connection.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Start streaming from the encoder and confirm in YouTube’s live control room that the incoming feed appears and the stream is live. Check playback, audio, and the displayed title from a viewer’s perspective.
- Plan archive and recovery. If you need YouTube replays, prefer sessions shorter than 12 hours, while recognizing that archive processing is not assured. Keep a local recording when the replay matters and establish a procedure to restart the encoder after an interruption.
Live-stream ads do not guarantee revenue
Eligible monetized channels can enable livestream monetization. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when monetization is turned on; mid-rolls can be automatic or manually configured. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve because YouTube’s ad systems select them based on multiple factors. Monetization remains subject to channel eligibility and policy review. See YouTube’s livestream monetization guidance.
