A blurry YouTube live stream can come from encoder settings, insufficient or unstable upload capacity, or the viewer’s playback quality. Check what the encoder is actually sending, compare its codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s live-ingest guidance, then test the stream under realistic conditions. A fast download result alone does not establish that your upload connection is good enough.
Start by checking the actual stream output
In your encoder’s output settings, note four values: resolution, frame rate, video codec, and bitrate. The encoder’s output—not the camera resolution, game resolution, or scene canvas—is what YouTube receives. Match all four values to the corresponding row and codec column in YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval must not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you need to choose them manually, its guidance says to create a custom stream key and enable manual settings.
Compare your bitrate with YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations
Use the live-ingest values below, not YouTube’s separate recommendations for encoding uploaded videos. Choose the column matching your incoming codec and the row matching both your output resolution and frame rate. These are YouTube Help’s minimum and recommended live-ingest bitrates, accessed in 2026; the page does not display a publication year.

| Incoming resolution / frame rate | AV1 or H.265 minimum (Mbps) | AV1 or H.265 recommended (Mbps) | H.264 minimum (Mbps) | H.264 recommended (Mbps) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4K / 2160p at 60 fps | 10 | 35 | 14 | 50 |
| 4K / 2160p at 30 fps | 8 | 30 | 11 | 42 |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 6 | 24 | 8 | 34 |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 5 | 15 | 7 | 21 |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 | 12 | 6 | 17 |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 | 10 | 5 | 14 |
| 720p at 60 fps | 2 | 6 | 3 | 8 |
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 | 6 | 3 | 8 |
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.3 | 3 | 0.4 | 4 |
| 360p at 30 fps | 0.3 | 3 | 0.4 | 4 |
At 1080p60, for example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 or 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265. At 1080p30, its recommendations are 14 Mbps for H.264 or 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265. These values describe incoming live streams, not a guarantee that every viewer will see a sharp picture. YouTube’s guidance does not identify the cause of any individual stream’s blur.
When the configured bitrate is below the recommendation
Consider raising it toward the matching recommended value only if your connection can sustain the resulting outbound traffic with headroom and stability. Increasing bitrate without enough upload capacity can make the feed less reliable rather than fixing the picture.

When the configured bitrate already meets the recommendation
Do not assume that adding more bitrate will solve the problem. Confirm the encoder’s actual output resolution and frame rate, check its warnings and stream health, and compare the preview with the quality selected by the viewer.
Check upload capacity and leave headroom
Test upload speed in conditions close to the broadcast, then compare the available outbound capacity with the stream’s total outgoing bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% headroom and notes that other people using a shared fast network can limit the capacity available to the streamer. If you send a backup stream as well, include its bitrate in the total. A high download-speed result does not answer whether upload capacity is sufficient. See YouTube’s network tips.

Check stability under realistic load
A speed test is a snapshot, not proof that the connection will stay stable throughout an event. Run a private or unlisted test while the network is being used as it normally would be, and watch stream health and messages. Network disruption can interrupt a stream.
If your computer or encoder supports it, an Ethernet cable for a wired streaming connection is a reasonable way to test whether local Wi-Fi instability is involved. It cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet provider, fix congestion beyond your local connection, or correct mismatched encoder settings. YouTube discusses network reliability and unplugging Ethernet when testing encoder failover; it does not say a cable boosts service bandwidth.

Use the preview to separate ingest problems from playback quality
- Prepare a representative test. Before the public event, send audio and motion similar to what you expect to stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check the Live Control Room preview before starting. If the preview is already soft, investigate the incoming encoder feed, including its actual output settings and network conditions.
- Monitor stream health and messages during the broadcast. Check whether warnings or changes in stream health coincide with visible quality problems.
- Compare what the viewer is watching. If the outgoing preview looks acceptable but a particular viewer sees a softer picture, check that viewer’s playback-quality selection, device, and network before changing your encoder.
YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. The encoder’s outgoing resolution therefore does not guarantee that every viewer receives or selects that same resolution.

RTMP versus RTMPS
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Protocol choice matters for secure transport, but YouTube does not present RTMPS itself as a way to make a picture sharper. Review YouTube’s encoder settings if you need to check ingest requirements.

Latency and buffering
YouTube says lower latency may mean more playback buffering. That is a trade-off involving playback delay, not a documented universal fix for blur. For 4K/2160 streams, YouTube says its low-latency improvement option is unavailable and streams are optimized for quality at normal latency. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
Quick troubleshooting: symptom, likely check, and next step
| What you observe | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The Live Control Room preview looks soft | Encoder output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and encoder warnings | Match the output to the correct YouTube live-ingest row; investigate feed settings and stability before raising bitrate. |
| The configured bitrate is below the recommendation | Available upload capacity under realistic network load | If there is sufficient headroom and stability, move toward the recommended value for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate. |
| The configured bitrate meets the recommendation, but the stream still looks blurry | Actual encoder output, stream health, preview, and viewer playback quality | Check for a lower output resolution, warnings, unstable upload, or a viewer-side playback limitation; the bitrate figure alone cannot identify the cause. |
| Quality changes or the stream health deteriorates during the event | Upload capacity and shared network use at that time | Repeat a test under representative load; consider a wired local-connection test if supported, while recognizing it cannot remedy limited ISP capacity. |
| Only one viewer reports blur | That viewer’s selected quality, device, and network | Compare with the Live Control Room preview before changing the encoder settings. |
