YouTube RTMP Stream Health Warnings When Looping Mixed-Frame-Rate Videos

A mixed-frame-rate playlist is not a confirmed cause of YouTube RTMP health warnings. Use the warning timestamp and encoder stats to distinguish ingest settings, network drops and local performance before testing the loop.

A playlist with clips at different frame rates is not, by itself, a confirmed cause of YouTube RTMP stream health warnings. YouTube checks the stream your encoder sends—its codec, output frame rate, bitrate, keyframes and other settings—while OBS separately reports network drops and local rendering or encoding strain. Start with the exact warning and encoder statistics; test the mixed-frame-rate playlist as a possible factor rather than assuming it is the cause.

What a YouTube stream health warning tells you

YouTube’s Live Dashboard and Live Control Room inspect the incoming stream and show errors beside the Health Indicator. YouTube classifies red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate. Record the warning’s exact wording and timestamp: the message points to a specific ingest problem, and YouTube says an error can persist while unresolved. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.

A YouTube ingest warning is not the same thing as viewers buffering, OBS dropping frames because of the network, or OBS struggling to render or encode locally. These describe different stages. Match the warning to the encoder’s output and its network and performance statistics before changing the playlist.

Are mixed-frame-rate videos the cause?

The official YouTube and OBS guidance cited here does not say that a loop containing clips with different source frame rates automatically causes an ingest warning. YouTube’s published requirements address the outgoing stream; OBS’s troubleshooting guidance covers network and computer workload. The sources do not establish how every encoder handles frame-rate changes between clips in a loop.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

It is reasonable to test whether the playlist matters, but treat that as a hypothesis. If the warning names a concrete output issue—such as keyframe frequency, codec, frame rate or resolution—correct that first. A consistently framed or normalized export can be one controlled test, not a YouTube requirement established by this guidance.

Check the outgoing RTMP settings

YouTube recommends letting Live Control Room detect resolution and frame rate unless you have a reason to configure a custom stream key with manual settings. For RTMP/RTMPS, its current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, output up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; keyframes should not be more than four seconds apart. Use the settings for your selected codec, resolution and frame rate rather than treating bitrate as a universal value. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

Bitrate depends on codec and output mode

As examples from YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, 1080p at 30 fps has a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended bitrate; 1080p at 60 fps has a 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not guarantees of delivery quality. Check the current table for the actual codec, resolution and frame rate you send.

Keyframe interval and GOP

YouTube links keyframe frequency to frame rate. Its error guidance gives a 30 fps example: a keyframe every 60 frames equals two seconds. The guidance also warns that ingestion errors can affect GOP size and says a closed GOP is required for optimal transcoding. If the warning says “incorrect video keyframe frequency,” inspect the encoder’s keyframe interval and GOP behavior rather than changing source clips first.

Other format checks

YouTube’s documented error examples include an unsupported format or codec, interlaced video, a frame rate above the configured maximum, and a resolution mismatch. Its recommendations also include progressive scan; for SDR, square pixels and Rec. 709. Check the exact warning against the outgoing encoder configuration. Do not assume that a source clip’s properties are the same as the stream’s output properties.

Diagnose the warning in order

  1. Capture the message. In Live Control Room or the Live Dashboard, write down the exact Health Indicator warning and timestamp. Note whether it is red or yellow.
  2. Verify the stream output. Check the encoder’s actual codec, output resolution and frame rate, bitrate mode and value, keyframe interval and GOP settings. Compare them with YouTube’s current guidance for that codec and mode.
  3. Read encoder statistics. Separate network dropped frames from rendering or encoding lag. If using OBS, check its stats and logs around the warning timestamp; the symptom category determines the next branch.
  4. Test the network branch. If OBS reports network drops, check whether the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS recommends wired connectivity and identifies faulty cables, routers and network cards as possible causes. Its stream connection troubleshooting guide covers additional checks.
  5. Test the local-performance branch. If output is choppy or OBS reports rendering or encoding strain, check GPU headroom, scene and source complexity, filters, output resolution and frame rate. OBS notes that frame rate affects rendering and encoding performance; lowering resolution or frame rate can reduce load but trades away image detail or motion smoothness. Consult OBS’s encoding performance guidance.
  6. Isolate the playlist only after those checks. Repeat a representative test with the same audio, movement, output settings and duration. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement. Hold output settings constant and change one source-related variable at a time—for example, compare the original mixed-rate loop with a consistently framed export. Record whether the warning and encoder statistics change. This controlled comparison is a diagnostic method, not a procedure YouTube publishes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely area to check Next action
YouTube reports incorrect video keyframe frequency Output keyframe interval, frame rate and GOP Check the interval against YouTube’s two-second recommendation and four-second maximum; at 30 fps, two seconds is 60 frames. Verify closed-GOP behavior where the encoder exposes it.
YouTube reports a codec, format, resolution or frame-rate mismatch Incoming stream configuration Compare the encoder’s actual output—not only the source files—with the settings YouTube detects and the applicable RTMP/RTMPS guidance.
OBS reports network dropped frames Connection stability or available upload capacity Check sustained capacity against the configured bitrate; try wired connectivity and inspect the cable, router and network adapter.
OBS reports rendering or encoding lag, or the stream looks choppy Local GPU or encoder workload Reduce scene complexity or filters, or lower output resolution or frame rate if necessary; retest and weigh the quality trade-off.
Warnings appear only with the mixed-rate loop, but settings and stats look normal Unconfirmed source-handling hypothesis Repeat the same test while changing only the source treatment, such as using a consistently framed export. A changed result can guide diagnosis but does not establish a general YouTube rule.
