If a YouTube stream stopped connecting from an Indian cloud server immediately after a firewall change, inspect outbound network access first—but treat the timing as a clue, not proof. Verify the ingest URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the encoder supports RTMPS, then test the server’s outbound connectivity and review the egress policy that changed. The cloud provider and rule are not identified here, so there is no single firewall setting that can be prescribed safely.
What the firewall change does—and does not—tell you
A failure that begins just after a firewall change makes the new egress policy an important lead. A rule may have affected outbound access, routing, or another part of the server’s network path. But timing alone does not establish that a particular port or rule caused the failure: the cloud provider, region, firewall product, and actual rule change are unknown.
Work through the checks in order. First confirm YouTube’s URL, protocol, and stream key; then check encoder support and connectivity from the host. If the encoder connects but the stream is unstable, investigate upload capacity separately. That distinction matters: a connection timeout and insufficient bandwidth are different failure modes.
1. Verify the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the ingest URL shown for the stream you are trying to start. Confirm that it is the RTMPS URL, rather than an ordinary RTMP URL.
- Check that the encoder is using the stream key associated with that stream. A correct server URL paired with a different or incorrect key will not establish the intended stream.
- Compare the copied URL with the value configured in the encoder, including the protocol and any port. Avoid relying on an old saved URL when the current Live Control Room provides the one to use.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which it describes as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection that provides encryption. See YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

2. Confirm the encoder supports RTMPS
Check the encoder’s version and its documentation or connection settings for explicit RTMPS support. Selecting an RTMPS URL is not enough if the encoder cannot use that protocol.
If the encoder reports an SSL error even though the RTMPS URL is correct, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to verify the URL and try specifying port 443 in the URL or encoder configuration. This is guidance for that documented error case—not proof that every YouTube endpoint or every cloud firewall must use only port 443. Follow the endpoint and settings shown for your stream, and ensure the actual outbound policy permits the required traffic. See YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.

3. Test outbound connectivity and inspect the changed policy
When the encoder output looks healthy but YouTube reports a connection timeout, YouTube says the outbound internet connection may be at fault. Test from the cloud host, not only from your laptop or workstation: those machines may have different network access.
- Check whether the host can reach the configured ingest endpoint using the protocol and port required by that endpoint.
- Review the firewall or egress-policy change made immediately before the failure. Compare the current configuration with the prior rule set, paying attention to outbound access, routing, and any related network policy.
- Check relevant host and cloud-network logs for denied outbound connections or routing errors around the time the encoder attempts to connect.
YouTube’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends verifying the server URL and RTMPS support when a connection times out; it does not prescribe a cloud-vendor-specific command or firewall rule. The precise test and policy location depend on your provider and deployment. Consult that provider’s documentation or support rather than opening a guessed port. See YouTube Help: troubleshoot live streaming errors.

4. If it connects but drops or buffers, check bandwidth and stability
A stream that reaches YouTube but becomes unstable may have a capacity or connection-reliability problem rather than an ingest-connection failure. YouTube says the total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That is YouTube’s bitrate recommendation, not a firewall-port requirement. See YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
- Compare the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate with the cloud server’s available upload capacity.
- Leave the recommended 20% of upload capacity as headroom instead of planning to use the full available amount.
- Investigate whether the connection is reliable over time, not just whether a brief connectivity check succeeds.
5. Consider HLS only when both ends are configured for it
YouTube documents HLS as an alternative ingest protocol, but switching protocols is not a generic way around an egress block. Use HLS only if the encoder supports it and the YouTube stream configuration and stream key are set up for HLS. Then verify that the actual firewall policy permits the traffic required by that configuration. See YouTube Help: use HLS for live streaming.

| Ingest option | What to verify | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | Use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, the matching stream key, an encoder with RTMPS support, and permitted outbound connectivity. | Specifying port 443 is not proof that every endpoint or deployment uses that port exclusively. |
| HLS | Confirm encoder support and configure YouTube’s stream settings and key for HLS; allow the required traffic under the actual network policy. | Changing to HLS does not guarantee that a firewall block will be bypassed. |
6. Isolate the change if the stream still will not connect
- Record the exact encoder error and whether it is a timeout, SSL error, rejected connection, or a stream that connects and later becomes unstable.
- Recheck the current Live Control Room URL and key, then confirm the encoder is using RTMPS and supports it.
- Check outbound reachability from the server and inspect the current firewall, egress, and routing policy.
- Compare the policy before and after the change. If your provider supports a controlled rollback or test, use its documented process and restore the intended secure policy once the cause is isolated.
- If you cannot identify the relevant rule, contact the cloud provider with the time of failure, encoder error, endpoint and protocol, and the before-and-after policy details. Without the provider and rule diff, the precise correction cannot be determined.
Common symptoms and next checks
| Symptom | Check next |
|---|---|
| Connection timeout | Verify the URL and RTMPS support, then test outbound connectivity from the cloud host and review the changed egress policy. |
| SSL error | Verify the RTMPS URL. For the documented SSL-error case, try specifying port 443 as YouTube suggests, while confirming the actual endpoint and firewall requirements. |
| Encoder looks healthy but YouTube cannot connect | Investigate outbound internet access from the host; local success from another machine does not confirm the server’s path works. |
| Stream connects but is unstable | Compare total stream bitrate with available upload capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and check connection reliability. |
| Considering a protocol switch | Use HLS only when both the encoder and YouTube stream configuration support it, and verify the firewall permits its required traffic. |
Or let it run in the cloud
