A drop alone does not establish that ACT is at fault: the cause may be the encoder, a busy home network, Wi-Fi, or the outbound connection.
Start with the stream-health message and encoder settings
In YouTube Studio, read the live stream’s health status and any error message. Check the encoder’s configured video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current live encoder settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. Confirm that the encoder is actually sending the settings you intend, rather than relying only on its saved profile.
For H.264 ingest, YouTube recommends these example bitrates:

These are YouTube recommendations for H.264 ingest, not measurements of ACT’s network and not a guarantee of a stable stream. YouTube also publishes bitrate ranges for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; use the figures for the codec you actually send rather than mixing codec recommendations. If you stream at a resolution or frame rate not listed above, consult the complete current settings table.

Use a steady bitrate and suitable keyframes
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Check these values in the encoder. A bitrate target describes what the encoder attempts to send; a speed test reports network capacity at a particular time. The target must be supportable by the available upload bandwidth, with room for audio and network variation.
Test representative content before changing several settings
Run a test stream with representative motion and audio, then watch the stream health and its messages. If you change resolution or bitrate, change one setting at a time and test again. YouTube notes that incorrect settings or insufficient bandwidth for the selected resolution can impair delivery; reducing resolution is one possible adjustment when the connection cannot sustain the current choice.

Check whether the encoder or source is struggling
Look at the encoder preview while the problem occurs. Check for encoder error indicators and unusually high CPU load, and compare the live image and sound with a local recording if available. YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance identifies source quality, encoder errors and CPU load as possible causes of poor output. A clean preview and local recording, alongside poor outbound results, make the connection path a more useful next place to investigate; they do not by themselves identify which part of that path is responsible.
- If the preview or local recording is already choppy, investigate the source, encoder settings and computer load before blaming the network.
- If the preview looks good but YouTube reports delivery or connection trouble, move on to upload capacity and network comparisons.
Measure upload capacity and leave headroom
Run an upload-speed test when the stream is dropping, not only at a convenient quiet time. Repeat it at the times and under the household conditions associated with the problem. YouTube advises leaving 20% of upload capacity unused and accounting for other devices and streams sharing the connection. Its streaming tips put the constraint plainly: “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.”

Include the stream’s video and audio, any backup stream, and other household upload activity in your capacity check. Download speed is not a substitute for upload speed; YouTube notes that download speed is often higher. A single high result is not proof that the connection can sustain a live upload continuously.
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, then reduce competing traffic
Run a wired comparison
Temporarily connect the streaming computer to the router by Ethernet and repeat the upload test and stream test with the same encoder settings. ACT’s home Wi-Fi guidance identifies wiring, router placement and capability, and the number of connected devices as factors that can affect home performance. It describes Cat5e/Cat6 wired connections as an option for checking the wired path. A cable can help make this comparison, but it is a diagnostic aid, not a remedy for an ISP-side fault.

- If Ethernet performs better than Wi-Fi, investigate the home wireless segment, router placement and device load.
- If Ethernet has similar trouble, that does not prove ACT is responsible. The encoder, router, other local equipment or outbound connection may still need investigation.
Repeat with a quieter network
Pause heavy uploads and downloads and stop other streams where practical. Keep the encoder settings and test method the same, then compare stream health and upload results across repeated sessions. YouTube warns that shared-network use and connectivity disruptions can affect delivery. Comparing Wi-Fi with Ethernet, a busy network with a quiet one, and a healthy local preview with YouTube’s stream-health messages helps narrow the likely area without treating one test as conclusive.

ACT’s setup and support guidance says subscribers can use the website or app to select a connectivity issue and raise a ticket if it persists. Include information support can act on:
- Dates and times of repeated drops.
- Whether the streaming computer was on Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Upload test results and the test conditions, including whether other traffic was paused.
- The encoder bitrate and relevant resolution, frame rate and codec.
- YouTube stream-health warnings or error messages, and whether other services were affected at the same time.
ACT’s published home-network advice describes possible factors in a subscriber’s home setup; it does not establish an ACT-wide fault, a routing issue, throttling or the cause of an individual stream’s drops. A line-specific cause requires investigation of that connection.
