Read the complete warning in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then compare the dimensions of the video your encoder is actually sending with the resolution selected in YouTube’s Ingestion Settings. If YouTube says the resolution is unsupported, use the expected dimensions shown in that message; there is no single resolution that fixes every stream.
What YouTube’s resolution mismatch warning means
YouTube is checking the incoming encoded video against the resolution chosen in Ingestion Settings. Its requirement is that the incoming video have the height and width selected there. The source recording’s resolution alone may not tell you what YouTube receives: an encoder can scale the video before sending it.
YouTube distinguishes a resolution that “is not optimal” from one that “is not supported for this configuration.” The second wording includes the expected video resolution. Follow the dimensions in your own message rather than assuming the target should be 720p or 1080p. YouTube’s live streaming error guidance explains these messages.
Fix the warning step by step
- Read the full, current message. In YouTube Studio, open the active stream in Live Control Room. Note the exact wording, any expected width and height, and the timestamp. YouTube says the Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check the stream being sent and display errors beside the Health Indicator.
- Check the outgoing dimensions. Find the width and height of the encoded output sent by your streaming software or service. Do not rely only on the recording’s file properties, camera resolution, or canvas dimensions: output scaling can change the dimensions that reach YouTube.
- Compare output with Ingestion Settings. Make the encoder’s output match the resolution selected for the stream, or choose an ingest configuration that matches the intended output. YouTube’s requirement is that the incoming video match the dimensions selected in Ingestion Settings.
- Use YouTube’s specific target when it reports an unsupported resolution. Set the outgoing dimensions to the expected width and height in the warning. If the message instead calls the current resolution “not optimal,” treat it as that distinct warning; do not assume it is the unsupported-configuration error.
- Check failover feeds if you use them. If the stream has primary and backup feeds, compare their resolutions and make them match. YouTube identifies different primary and backup resolutions as an error condition.
- Check playlist transitions if the warning returns. Inspect each recording’s dimensions and frame rate, then check that the encoder’s Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution are set as intended. In a prerecorded playlist, inconsistent dimensions or other media settings may make the issue recur when playback moves to another file. StreamNeo’s playlist stream-health guide also recommends checking consistency in frame rate, audio sample rate, and codecs; the exact YouTube warning remains the guide to this particular fix.
- Make one relevant change and check stream health again. Look for a fresh message after the change. Avoid changing bitrate, audio, or other unrelated settings unless YouTube reports a separate issue.
Which resolution should you choose?
Choose the resolution that matches the stream configuration and your intended encoded output. If YouTube reports that the current resolution is unsupported, its message supplies the expected dimensions for that configuration. Do not select a resolution simply because it is common or because it matches the original file.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The YouTube Live Streaming API reference lists resolution configuration values including 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p, as well as variable for automatic detection. These are API configuration options, not a recommendation for which resolution your individual stream should use. The API specifies that variable resolution and variable frame rate must be selected together.
Why a prerecorded playlist can trigger it repeatedly
A playlist can contain recordings with different dimensions or frame rates. If the outgoing stream changes characteristics as playback advances, a warning may appear again at a file transition. Check the files individually and standardize their properties where practical, then confirm the encoder output still matches the stream’s Ingestion Settings. If primary and backup feeds are involved, check their settings separately as well.

What the warning’s color tells you
YouTube marks stream-health errors red when they are critical and may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems; yellow errors are moderate and may degrade quality. The color indicates severity, while the error text identifies the issue. Use the full message and its timestamp to verify whether the resolution warning has cleared or a different problem is being reported. See YouTube’s error-message guidance.
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Matching the file but not the encoded output: scaling can make the outgoing width and height differ from the recording. Check the stream output.
- Guessing a standard target: the correct dimensions depend on the stream configuration. Use YouTube’s expected dimensions when provided.
- Changing bitrate to fix a dimensions warning: bitrate is not the resolution. Change the setting identified by the warning; address bitrate only if another health message points to it.
- Checking only the first playlist item: a later file with different dimensions may coincide with the warning returning. Inspect the full playlist.
- Leaving primary and backup at different resolutions: align the feeds’ resolution settings when failover is configured.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on YouTube without leaving a local computer on, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not correct a mismatch in the source files or YouTube ingest settings, so make sure the outgoing video matches the resolution YouTube expects.
