Yes—but the return already happened. YouTube discontinued its original Premium Lite offering after October 25, 2023, then launched a new version in 2025. In February 2026, it added background play and downloads for most eligible videos. The current plan is still a regional, lower-priced alternative to full Premium, not an all-content ad-free subscription.
What happened to YouTube Premium Lite?
The original Premium Lite was a pilot introduced in selected European markets in 2021. Subscribers were told it would end after October 25, 2023; that date comes from cancellation notices reproduced by subscribers, rather than a currently published YouTube policy page. Subscriber reports of the discontinuation notice help explain why older articles still describe Lite as discontinued.
YouTube later brought back the name for a new product. Its March 5, 2025 announcement introduced a new Premium Lite pilot, starting in the United States and expanding to existing pilot markets including Australia, Thailand and Germany. Further market expansions were announced afterward. The relaunch was a new version, not simply a continuation of the 2021 plan.
What does the current plan include?
Premium Lite is designed to reduce interruptions on most ordinary, non-music videos. It works across supported devices, but it does not make every YouTube surface or every kind of video ad-free. YouTube’s current membership details describe the exclusions and regional terms.

- Most regular videos: generally ad-free, including much creator content such as tutorials, gaming, news and cooking.
- Music and music-related content: ads may appear on music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs and user videos containing music-partner material, such as some covers, dance videos and vlogs using popular music.
- Shorts: ads may still appear, and Shorts are excluded from Lite’s background-play and download features.
- Search and browsing: advertising may still appear in these surfaces.
- YouTube Music Premium: not included.
What changed in 2026?
On February 24, 2026, YouTube announced that Premium Lite would gain background play and downloads for most eligible videos. The rollout was planned over several weeks in markets where the membership was available. These features do not remove the music and Shorts exclusions: background play and downloads are not a substitute for YouTube Music Premium or full Premium’s broader coverage.
YouTube says the features are available through the YouTube and YouTube Kids apps where those apps are available. Availability can depend on the market and rollout, so a feature announcement does not guarantee that every account, device or browser has identical access. The comparison reflects YouTube’s Premium Lite help page and its 2025 plan announcement. “Most eligible videos” matters: neither Lite’s background play nor its downloads should be read as applying to every video.
Which plan fits your viewing?
Choose Lite if you mostly watch creator videos
Lite is most likely to suit someone who watches long-form creator content—such as documentaries, explainers, tutorials or gaming—and wants fewer ad breaks without paying for a music subscription. It is less compelling if a large share of your YouTube time is spent on Shorts or music.

Choose full Premium if music and broad coverage matter
Full Premium is the better fit if you use YouTube Music, listen with the screen off, watch many music videos, or want broader ad-free and offline coverage. YouTube positions full Premium for users seeking ad-free viewing across videos, broader background play and downloads, and YouTube Music Premium.
Check your habits before deciding
- If you mainly watch ordinary long-form videos, Lite’s narrower coverage may be enough.
- If you rely on YouTube for music, Lite’s music exclusions are a central limitation.
- If you watch mostly Shorts, Lite may leave more of your viewing experience unchanged.
- If you need offline access or background playback for music, compare full Premium rather than assuming Lite covers it.
Availability and price: check your account’s offer
Premium Lite is not available everywhere, and YouTube’s rollout announcements are milestones rather than a permanent, complete country list. Later expansions included markets such as Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Canada and the United Kingdom; a YouTube Community post also reported availability in India, Japan and the Philippines. The expansion announcement is historical, so check the current Premium Lite signup page for your location.

YouTube announced a U.S. launch price of $7.99 per month on March 5, 2025. That was the launch price, not a guarantee of the current price. YouTube directs people to the signup page for the price applicable to their location; country, currency, billing platform and taxes can affect what is shown.
