It was part of Google’s transition away from Google Play Music, which was discontinued in 2020. The original transfer window has ended; this is a look at what the feature did and what options remain for old files.
What the Google Play Music transfer moved
Google described the tool as a library migration, not just a way to copy playlists. Its May 2020 announcement said users could transfer:
- Personal music uploads and purchased music
- Songs and albums added to a library
- Playlists users had created and playlists they had subscribed to
- Likes and dislikes
- Curated stations
- Listening history and personal taste preferences, which Google said would inform YouTube Music recommendations
These were categories Google said the service would move, not a promise that every item would retain identical metadata, ranking, playback history or presentation. Podcasts followed a separate migration path toward Google Podcasts; they were not simply another category in the music transfer. Google’s May 2020 announcement
Not all “music” meant the same thing
A purchased track, a file uploaded by the user, a song saved from a subscription catalog and a playlist entry have different meanings. A purchase or personal file is not the same as access to a subscription-catalog recording, which may depend on licensing and an active subscription. A playlist can carry a song reference without making that recording a permanently owned file.

How the transfer worked in 2020
The original process was designed for Google Play Music users moving into YouTube Music. Google’s app-based instructions at the time were:
- Install or open YouTube Music on an iOS or Android device.
- Select the Google Play Music transfer option shown in YouTube Music.
- Authorize the move of eligible library content and preferences.
- Wait for Google’s completion notification.
- Review the Library tab and home recommendations in YouTube Music.
Google also described a web-based transfer route in communications around the migration. These are historical steps: current YouTube Music menus should not be expected to contain the old Google Play Music transfer control. Google’s announcement

Other changes Google highlighted during the transition
The transfer tool was the central feature, but Google also pointed to improvements intended to make YouTube Music a more viable successor. These were migration-era changes, not all functions of the transfer button itself.
| Change Google highlighted | What it meant |
|---|---|
| Playlist capacity | The limit rose from 1,000 to 5,000 songs per playlist. |
| Personal uploads | YouTube Music supported up to 100,000 personal tracks, which Google described as more than 50,000 above Google Play Music’s limit. |
| Discovery and organization | Google highlighted lyrics, an Explore tab, personalized mixes and recommendations, and official playlists. |
| Broader catalog | YouTube Music offered official recordings alongside live performances, remixes, B-sides and other less-standard releases. |
| Offline listening | Google described offline downloads as a benefit for paying members. |
Google’s May 2020 announcement described these limits and features in the context of the transition. They should not be read as a statement of every current plan term or interface detail.

Why Google moved users to YouTube Music
Google was consolidating its music services. On August 4, 2020, it said YouTube Music would replace Google Play Music by December. Its announced regional timetable began with New Zealand and South Africa in September 2020, followed by other global markets in October. Google gave users time to move their libraries and become familiar with the successor service. Google’s shutdown announcement
The migration addressed a practical switching problem: users had accumulated uploads, purchases, playlists and listening preferences over years. YouTube Music, however, was not merely Google Play Music under a new name. Its catalog and discovery experience drew on YouTube’s mix of official music and video-associated versions, which could make organization and matching feel different.

What might not have matched exactly
Google listed the kinds of data intended to move, but did not promise byte-for-byte preservation of every account detail. In practice, a migrated library could differ in ways that matter to listeners:
- Unavailable playlist tracks: A recording that was no longer available or licensed might not play in the new service.
- Alternate versions: A match could point to a remaster, live performance or music video rather than the exact recording previously saved.
- Duplicates: Different versions or matches can make the same song appear more than once.
- Recommendations: Transferred taste preferences could inform recommendations without reproducing Google Play Music’s recommendation system exactly.
- Accounts: A library can appear missing if YouTube Music is open under a different Google account. Do not assume every account type, including managed or brand accounts, behaved identically.
Can you still transfer a Google Play Music library?
No general-purpose version of the original Google Play Music migration should be treated as currently available. Google’s 2020 shutdown plan set a December deadline for transferring libraries before Google Play Music data was no longer available through that service. YouTube Music Help currently covers subjects such as uploads and playlist management, but that does not establish that the old Google Play Music transfer control remains active. If you have an old export or local files
- Look for Google Takeout archives or local backups you saved during the shutdown period. Google recommended Takeout for exporting purchased and uploaded material then; it cannot recover files that were never exported and are no longer retained. Google Takeout
- In YouTube Music, check the account you are using and review the Library and uploads areas separately. A missing playlist entry does not necessarily mean an uploaded file is missing, and vice versa.
- Upload eligible music files manually if you still have them. YouTube Music Help documents upload guidance, but manual uploads do not restore the old account’s full history or entitlements. YouTube Music Help
- If you only need playlists, consider a current playlist-transfer service or rebuild them in your chosen service. Such tools generally do not transfer purchased files, personal uploads, complete listening histories or purchase entitlements.
Subscription and offline-use context
Google described a free, ad-supported tier as well as paid YouTube Music Premium and YouTube Premium options. In its May 2020 announcement, it listed YouTube Music Premium at $9.99 per month and YouTube Premium at $11.99 per month; those are historical US prices, not current 2026 prices. Google also said offline downloads required paid membership. Do not infer today’s prices, regional availability or legacy-plan eligibility from that announcement. May 2020 announcement
The key distinction is that access to a subscription catalog was not the same as owning a purchased track or possessing an uploaded file. A saved catalog song could remain subject to licensing and subscription terms even if it appeared in a migrated library.
