On Android, open Profile picture → Settings → Data saving and enable Don’t play music videos. For the most dependable way to avoid cellular streaming, download music on Wi-Fi and play it offline.
What audio-only mode does
Audio-only mode is a playback choice and data-saving control inside YouTube Music, not a separate app or a downloadable audio copy of every video. When an audio version is available, it lets you listen without loading the associated music video. Google notes that availability can depend on the content. Google’s guide to audio and video modes explains the controls and their limits.
- Song plays the audio or album version of a music track when available; Video plays the associated music video.
- Audio plays a podcast without its video; Video plays the podcast video.
- The global Data saving switches tell the app not to play music or podcast videos by default.
Audio-only mode is different from background playback, which keeps music playing when you use another app or turn off the screen. It is also different from offline downloads, which let you play saved content without streaming it. Google’s background-play help describes that separate feature.
How to enable audio-only playback on Android
- Open the YouTube Music app.
- Tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Settings, then Data saving.
- Turn on Don’t play music videos.
- If you listen to podcasts, also turn on Don’t play podcast videos.
- Start a track and check that the player is set to Song, not Video. For a podcast, choose Audio, not Video.
These are Google’s documented Android labels and path; wording or placement can vary with app version. The setting avoids loading the video in supported cases, but it is not a guarantee that a video source will never be involved.

Switch the mode for one track or episode
Music
Open the track and select Song at the top of the player. Select Video to watch its music video. A Video option may not appear when no video is available.
Podcasts
Open the episode and select Audio at the top of the player. Choose Video to play its video, if one is available. Audio-only podcast listening is available without membership for eligible content.
If a track has no separate audio recording and its only available source is a music video, YouTube Music may play that source in audio-only mode rather than stop playback. The player’s mode is therefore a better check than assuming every song has a distinct audio file.

Audio-only mode saves data compared with loading the corresponding video, but Google does not publish a universal saving percentage. Actual use depends on audio and video quality, track length, buffering, advertisements, network conditions, and whether you were already playing an audio version. The benefit is most relevant when a playlist would otherwise play video-oriented versions rather than standard album tracks.
Ways to reduce data use further
Download music on Wi-Fi for offline listening
For the most predictable reduction in cellular streaming, download playlists, albums, or tracks while connected to Wi-Fi, then play the downloaded content offline. Music downloads require Premium. Downloaded music needs to reconnect to the service at least once every 30 days to maintain access. Google’s download guide explains download management and connection options.
Podcast downloads are generally available without Premium, though availability of audio-only downloads depends on the show or episode. If a downloaded podcast will not play as audio, the content may not support that download format.
Review audio quality and download settings
Check the app’s download and storage or audio-quality controls for the options available in your version. Lower audio quality can reduce file size and data use, but labels and controls vary across platforms and app versions; there is no single current menu path established here for every phone. Google notes that file size and data use depend on the length and quality of downloaded audio or video.

Control Smart Downloads
Smart Downloads can automatically save recently played or recommended music. If you have limited data or storage, review its settings and connection type, or turn it off. Check that manual and automatic downloads are restricted to Wi-Fi where your app offers that choice. On Android, a Wi-Fi and unrestricted mobile data option is available only on Android R or newer and supported carriers; Google lists Verizon and AT&T in the United States and KDDI and SoftBank in Japan. It is not a universal setting.
Choose audio versions in video-heavy playlists
Playlists can include live performances, remixes, video uploads, or other versions without a separate album recording. When a standard song version is available, choose it rather than assuming every playlist item is an ordinary audio stream.
Check your phone’s cellular usage
Phone settings can show YouTube Music’s cellular-data use over a chosen period. Check before and after a listening session to see how the app behaves on your own device and network; this is a device-level measurement, not a YouTube Music estimate.

On iPhone or iPad, check your profile picture and Settings for the current data-saving or playback controls; labels and availability may differ. If you do not find a global switch, select Song or Audio in the individual player when offered. Google’s iOS download help covers offline listening and its limitations. Why a video may still appear or the setting may be missing
A video appears despite the global switch
- You selected Video manually for the item.
- The music video is the only available source for that track, so it may play in audio-only mode.
- The player may show video artwork or an interface element; that alone does not establish that the full video stream is loading.
- The setting may not apply to the device or account where playback is happening.
Check the player mode, confirm the account, and restart or update the app if the controls do not behave as expected. Google recommends keeping the mobile app current for Premium features; see supported devices and Premium features.
The audio-only option is missing
- For music, confirm that the signed-in account has YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium.
- Check that you are signed into the intended Google account and are looking at a music track rather than a podcast, or vice versa.
- Update the app and check whether the control appears for a different eligible track or episode.
- Some features or content may not be available in every region or for every item.
Downloads are unavailable or still use cellular data
A podcast may not support an audio-only download. A music track may still be streaming if it was never downloaded, its download was incomplete, it is not stored on the device, or Smart Downloads refreshed over cellular. Casting, a watch, or another playback device may also use its own connection. If a download stops working, reconnect the app to the internet; saved content needs periodic access to remain available.
Is Premium worth it just for data saving?
If you only need to reduce data occasionally, start with Wi-Fi downloads where possible or use an existing service that already meets your needs. YouTube Music Premium makes more sense when you also want its music catalog, background playback, ad-free music, and offline music downloads. YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium benefits as well as benefits for YouTube itself, so it is a better fit only if those additional YouTube features matter to you. Plans and prices vary by country and billing route; check the current offer for your location at YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium, and consult Google’s membership-plan information.
Before listening on cellular, check that music-video playback is disabled, the track is set to Song, downloads are complete, and automatic downloads will not use mobile data. If you need to stop streaming altogether during playback, use downloaded content offline.
