You can earn money on YouTube through ads, YouTube Premium, fan-funding features, product sales and brand partnerships. These routes have different eligibility rules and revenue models: meeting a subscriber or view threshold does not guarantee acceptance or a particular income. Check the Earn area in YouTube Studio and the current rules for your country before making plans.
Ways to earn money on YouTube
YouTube monetization is broader than advertising. Some routes pay through YouTube’s revenue-sharing systems; others depend on viewers buying from you or a brand agreeing to work with you.
Watch-page ads
Eligible YouTube Partner Program (YPP) creators can earn a share of revenue from ads on public long-form videos and other eligible watch-page playback. You must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module and enable ads. A video’s suitability for ads is still subject to YouTube’s guidelines and review. YouTube’s monetization settings explain the available options.
Shorts Feed ads
Eligible partners who accept the Shorts Monetization Module can share revenue from ads shown between Shorts in the feed. This is a separate system from watch-page ads, and only eligible Shorts views count. Some views are excluded, including views of non-original Shorts, artificial or fake views, and views inconsistent with advertiser-friendly guidelines. YouTube Premium
When a YouTube Premium subscriber watches your content, you may receive part of that subscriber’s fee, subject to the applicable module and feature conditions. This is distinct from ad revenue. YouTube’s earnings overview describes the relevant revenue-sharing arrangements.
Memberships and paid audience interactions
- Channel memberships: Viewers pay recurring monthly amounts for perks you provide to members.
- Super Chat and Super Stickers: During eligible live streams and Premieres, viewers can pay to highlight messages or display animated images in live chat.
- Super Thanks: Viewers can pay for an animation and highlighted comment on eligible videos or Shorts.
These features depend on their own eligibility and availability rules. You need to provide any promised member perks and account for the work of maintaining them.
Shopping and merchandise
Eligible creators may connect a store and showcase their own merchandise. Some eligible creators can also tag or promote products from other brands through YouTube Shopping, including its affiliate program. Feature access and availability vary, so verify what YouTube offers for your channel and region in Studio and its monetization guidance.

Brand partnerships
A brand may pay you to feature or discuss its product or service. Sponsorships are negotiated between the creator and brand rather than paid through YPP revenue sharing; compensation and terms depend on that relationship. YouTube identifies brand work as an earning route in its creator tips.

YouTube’s published guidance describes two different YPP thresholds. The lower, expanded-YPP level can provide earlier access to fan-funding and Shopping features in eligible countries. The higher level is the listed threshold for watch-page ads, Shorts ad sharing and YouTube Premium revenue. These are eligibility thresholds, not income estimates or guarantees of acceptance.

These figures reflect YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026; check the current expanded YPP overview and monetization feature requirements before relying on them. Shorts-feed watch time does not count toward the 4,000-hour watch-time route. Views and watch time from paid ad campaigns do not count toward the eligibility thresholds.
Thresholds are only one part of eligibility
YouTube also applies account, geography and monetization-policy conditions, and reviews channels before accepting them into YPP. Individual features can have additional requirements and may not be available in every country. A channel can meet the numbers and still not qualify. Review the YPP overview and eligibility requirements, then check the Earn area in YouTube Studio for your channel’s status.
What YouTube’s revenue-share percentages mean
YouTube’s published earnings guidance gives different shares for different products. The percentages below use different revenue bases and modules, so they are not directly comparable as shares of the same gross amount.

These are the figures in YouTube Help’s current earnings guidance accessed in 2026, not a forecast of what an individual channel will receive. As YouTube puts it: “There are no guarantees under the YouTube partner agreement about how much or whether you’ll be paid.” Read the earnings overview for the module-specific terms.

How to choose a monetization path
Start with your format, audience and capacity to deliver what each route requires. No route is established as the best-paying option for every creator, and YouTube’s published guidance does not provide a universal earnings forecast.
- Long-form videos: Watch-page ads and Premium revenue are relevant once you meet the higher YPP requirements. Videos still need to comply with monetization and advertiser-suitability rules.
- Shorts: Shorts ad sharing has its own module, threshold route and rules about which views qualify.
- Live streams or Premieres: Eligible creators may use Super Chat and Super Stickers; paid audience interaction is different from ad sharing.
- Ongoing member content: Memberships create recurring viewer payments, but require perks you can consistently provide.
- Products: Your own merchandise and eligible Shopping features can suit a creator with products that fit the audience. Store operations and product fulfillment are separate from ad revenue.
- Brand deals: Sponsorships depend on a suitable brand relationship and negotiated terms, not YPP thresholds.
Policies, account continuity and taxes
YPP participation depends on continued compliance, not just reaching the entry thresholds. YouTube’s monetization policies cover channel content and advertiser suitability; policy violations can lead to lost monetization. YouTube says it may turn off monetization for channels that have not uploaded a video or posted for six months or more. Read the channel monetization policies and check Studio for notices affecting your channel.
YouTube also notes that creators may be liable for taxes on their earnings. Tax rules depend on where you live and your circumstances; consult your local tax authority or a qualified tax professional for guidance.

YouTube’s guidance surfaced as of October 3, 2026, also notes that YPP terms are scheduled to begin changing on February 1, 2027, and asks creators to review and accept updated terms by January 31, 2027. Because that change is future-dated, check the latest notice and terms in YouTube Studio before acting.
