You can also ask the claimant to retract the request, or, if you meet YouTube’s conditions, complete Copyright School and wait for the strike to expire. These routes have different consequences: a strike expiring does not restore the removed stream.
First, check what YouTube actually did
A rejected Content ID appeal is not itself a copyright strike. A Content ID claim is a claim against material in a video; a strike follows a copyright removal request that YouTube considers valid. Check the notice and your channel’s copyright status to identify which stage applies:
- Claim or rejected appeal only: You may not have a strike. Read the notice for any indication that the claimant submitted a copyright removal request.
- Removal notice and active strike: The stream has been taken down and YouTube has applied a strike. The remaining routes described by YouTube include a counter notification, a claimant’s retraction, or eligible strike expiration.
- Counter notification already filed: Check whether YouTube forwarded it, rejected it for missing required information, or reported that the claimant provided evidence of legal action.
The correct next step depends on the actual notice and status—not just the fact that an appeal was denied.
What can I do if my appeal was rejected and my stream was taken down?
1. Submit a counter notification if the removal was mistaken
YouTube describes a counter notification as a legal request for content removed by mistake or misidentification. That can include a situation where the uploader believes the use qualifies for a copyright exception, such as fair use. It is not another routine appeal: you must provide the information and legal statements YouTube requires, and YouTube reviews it before forwarding a valid notice to the claimant.

Use this route only if you can truthfully make the required statements and explain your right to use the material. A rejected Content ID appeal does not by itself establish that the takedown was wrong, and a strike does not by itself establish that the use was unlawful. The available information here cannot determine whether your particular livestream was licensed, fair use, or otherwise lawful.
If YouTube rejects a counter notification because information is missing, its guidance says you can submit a new one with the required information. That does not guarantee forwarding or reinstatement. YouTube also allows an authorized representative to submit a counter notification. Because this is a legal process and rules depend on the facts and jurisdiction, consider getting legal advice if you are unsure what you can state or what evidence supports your position.

2. Ask the claimant to retract the removal request
You can contact the claimant and ask them to withdraw the removal request. YouTube identifies retraction as a way to resolve a strike, but the claimant is not required to agree. If you pursue this, keep the communication focused on the specific removed stream and request that the claimant retract the removal request through YouTube’s process.
3. Complete Copyright School and wait, if eligible
YouTube says a strike expires after 90 days when you have completed Copyright School and have fewer than three active copyright strikes. Expiration clears the strike under those conditions; it does not bring back the removed livestream. Three copyright strikes within 90 days make a channel subject to termination, so check your active-strike count rather than assuming waiting is risk-free.

What happens after YouTube forwards a counter notification?
If YouTube forwards a valid counter notification, the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content from being reinstated. If YouTube does not receive that evidence within the period, the content may be reinstated unless you deleted it. This is a process deadline, not a promise that every counter notification will succeed or that the stream will return on a particular date.
YouTube says it may remove content again if it receives evidence of legal action after the deadline or after reinstatement. Strike status may be reassessed after a court decision. If YouTube tells you the claimant has taken legal action, the dispute has moved beyond a routine platform appeal; consider legal advice about your situation.

If the takedown was scheduled, check whether the removal is already effective
For some scheduled copyright removal requests, YouTube gives the uploader seven days to act before removal becomes effective. Depending on the circumstances, actions during that window may include seeking a retraction or canceling an appeal. Once removal is effective and the strike has been applied, use the available strike-resolution routes rather than assuming the earlier window remains open. Follow the deadline and options stated in your own notice.
