A YouTube channel associated with a Brand Account can go live if the channel is verified, has had no live-stream restriction in the past 90 days, and the person starting the stream has a role that allows it. The operator must be at least 16. Brand Account status does not create a separate general eligibility test; mobile streaming has an additional 50-subscriber requirement. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and its method-specific help pages were reviewed on October 3, 2026.
What you need before going live
- Channel eligibility: Verify the correct YouTube channel and confirm it has no live-stream restriction from the previous 90 days. The minimum age to live stream is 16. These are general channel requirements, not a separate Brand Account test. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance
- Permission for the operator: Owners, managers, and editors with YouTube channel permissions can manage live streams. Viewer and viewer-limited roles cannot start or end a stream, access its key, or change stream settings or metadata. YouTube’s channel-permissions role guidance
- Activation time: If live streaming has not been enabled on the channel before, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable it ahead of the event. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance
Choose how to stream
The subscriber threshold applies to mobile streaming, not to every way of going live. Choose a method based on what you are broadcasting and what equipment you have.
| Method | Best suited to | Additional requirements or setup |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | Quick updates from a phone or tablet | At least 50 subscribers, channel verification, no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, activation, and a supported device. YouTube’s mobile guidance lists Android 8.0 or later and iOS 8 or later; check the current help page for updated device requirements. Mobile live-streaming requirements |

| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, multiple cameras or microphones, and other involved productions | Use encoder software or a hardware encoder, then connect it to YouTube with the stream URL and key. Check the preview before starting. Encoder setup instructions |

Check Brand Account access and assign roles
If a channel owner can go live but a colleague cannot, check that colleague’s role on the YouTube channel. Brand Account membership alone does not mean every person has permission to operate a stream. YouTube recommends channel permissions for managing channel access.
- The primary Brand Account owner signs in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Settings → Permissions and choose Move permissions to move Brand Account delegation to channel permissions.
- Invite existing Brand Account users and assign each an appropriate channel-permission level. Existing users must be assigned a level and invited.
- Give live-stream operators an owner, manager, or editor role. Viewer and viewer-limited roles cannot operate a live stream; Brand Account communications managers cannot use YouTube.
Role descriptions and access controls can change, so check YouTube’s Brand Account migration instructions and its current channel-permissions role matrix when setting access.

Set up an encoder stream
Use an encoder when the production calls for screen capture, gameplay, or external audio and video equipment. YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders. Expensive equipment is not required simply to begin streaming.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open the Live Control Room, then create or select the stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the corresponding fields in your encoder.
- Keep the stream key private: it functions like a password. If it is compromised, YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset it.
- Start the encoder and wait for YouTube’s preview. Check that the preview appears and that the event is accessible before starting the live stream.
Follow YouTube’s encoder instructions for the current Live Control Room workflow and encoder-specific settings.

Test before an event
YouTube recommends preparing an encoder at least two hours before the stream and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. These are preparation recommendations, not eligibility requirements. Use the time to check:
- The Live Control Room preview, audio, and video.
- That the stream is visible on the channel or watch page and plays on a mobile device.
- Your internet connection: YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate.
- If recording locally, that the local archive file is growing.
See YouTube’s streaming tips for its preparation and network guidance.

Why a Brand Account channel may not be able to go live
- Live streaming has not been activated: Enable it in YouTube Studio and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- The wrong channel is selected: Check the active channel in YouTube or Studio; requirements apply to that channel.
- The channel is not verified or has a recent restriction: Check verification and whether a live-stream restriction occurred in the previous 90 days.
- The operator has a viewer role: Ask a channel owner to assign an eligible channel-permission role. A viewer cannot start or end a stream or use its key.
- You are trying to stream from mobile with fewer than 50 subscribers: The 50-subscriber threshold is specific to mobile streaming. It is not YouTube’s general eligibility rule for desktop or encoder streams.
- The phone or tablet is unsupported: Check YouTube’s current mobile requirements and use another streaming method if needed.
- The encoder does not connect or show a preview: Recheck that the stream URL and key were copied into the correct encoder fields, and confirm that the key has not been changed. Do not share the key; if it is compromised, ask an owner or manager to reset it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of prerecorded video rather than a live camera production, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist running from the cloud. - One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
