Yes—an Indian school can livestream on YouTube if its channel is verified, has no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and an eligible adult aged 16 or older starts the broadcast. The 50-subscriber minimum applies to streaming from the YouTube mobile app, not to computer webcam or encoder streaming in YouTube’s cited guidance. School-managed accounts and streams featuring students under 16 need additional checks.
Check these eligibility requirements first
- Verify the channel. YouTube requires verification before a channel can livestream. Verification uses a phone code sent by text or voice call; YouTube says a phone number can be linked to no more than two channels per year. See YouTube’s account verification instructions.
- Check the channel’s live-stream standing. It must have no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Restrictions can follow policy or copyright issues. Do not try to evade a restriction by switching to another channel: YouTube identifies that as circumvention. YouTube’s live-stream restriction guidance explains the rule.
- Have an adult aged 16 or older start the stream. YouTube’s minimum age for starting a livestream has been 16 since its policy update dated July 22, 2025. If an under-16 student participates from an adult-owned account, the adult must be visibly present. A delegated adult starting the broadcast in Live Control Room must also be visibly present and engage in it. Read YouTube’s guidance on avoiding live-stream restrictions.
- Enable livestreaming in advance. YouTube says activation for a channel’s first live stream can take up to 24 hours after the feature is enabled. Do not leave this setup until the day of a school event. YouTube’s mobile streaming guide describes the activation wait.
- Confirm the account is allowed to use YouTube. For a school-managed Google Workspace for Education account, ask the administrator whether YouTube access is enabled and whether the account is marked under 18. That setting can make features such as channel creation and livestreaming unavailable. The general Google Account age guidance does not settle access for a Workspace for Education account. See YouTube’s guidance on school accounts and Google’s age requirements.
Mobile and computer streaming have different subscriber rules
| Method | What the school needs to know |
|---|---|
| Computer webcam | The general requirements still apply: verified channel, no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and an adult aged 16 or older starting the stream. You need a computer with a webcam. The cited YouTube webcam guidance does not state a subscriber minimum. See the webcam instructions. |
| Computer encoder | The general channel and age requirements apply. The cited official guidance does not state a subscriber minimum for computer encoder streaming. Check the channel’s current eligibility and Live Control Room before the event. YouTube’s getting-started guide covers live-stream methods. |
| YouTube mobile app | YouTube lists a minimum of 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and an enabled live feature. Its help page lists Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+ as device requirements. Below 1,000 subscribers, mobile streams may have audience limits and their archives may be private by default; limits can take time to clear after the channel reaches 1,000. Check YouTube’s mobile requirements. |
The mobile page’s mention of India concerns availability of Playables livestreaming, a specific feature. It does not waive the normal subscriber or other requirements for ordinary mobile livestreaming.
For streams with students under 16, keep an adult visibly involved
If younger students appear, use an adult-owned account and have the adult visibly present and meaningfully participating in the broadcast. YouTube warns that a stream featuring under-16s without a visibly present adult may have chat disabled or be removed, and the channel may lose live-stream access. Keep students’ personal details and identifying location information out of the broadcast. Consult YouTube’s child safety policy as well as its live-stream guidance.
Choose the audience setting for the actual content
In Live Control Room, set the audience according to whether the particular stream is made for kids. Being a school does not, by itself, determine the right setting; consider the content and intended audience. YouTube lists live chat, comments, notifications, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and personalized advertising among the features restricted for streams designated Made for Kids. These restrictions affect interaction and monetization, not the baseline eligibility to enable livestreaming. See YouTube’s audience-setting guidance.

Why can’t the school channel go live?
- The channel is not verified: complete phone verification, then check livestream availability again.
- A restriction is active or falls within the 90-day lookback: review YouTube’s notice and address the underlying issue. Do not use another channel to bypass the restriction.
- The account is school-managed: ask the Workspace administrator to check YouTube access and whether the Education account is marked under 18. A general Google account age rule is not a substitute for this check.
- The school is trying to use mobile streaming below 50 subscribers: the cited mobile requirements set that threshold. Consider a computer webcam or encoder method, which has no subscriber minimum stated in the cited guidance, while meeting the other eligibility requirements.
- The first livestream was enabled recently: activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable it well before the scheduled broadcast.
- A mobile stream has limited reach or a private archive: below 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may limit the audience and make the archive private by default. Reaching 1,000 may not remove limits immediately.
- A stream with under-16s has chat disabled or is removed: ensure an adult is visibly present and participating, and review YouTube’s child-safety requirements.
Keep an always-on YouTube stream running from the cloud
If the school’s goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings, rather than a live event from a camera, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It is YouTube-only and does not stream from a camera.
