If OBS stays on “Connecting,” first check the stream’s status in YouTube Live Control Room, then verify OBS’s YouTube service, server and stream key. If those are correct, check OBS output and logs, then test whether your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. The label alone does not identify the cause, so use the status message and evidence from each step rather than resetting settings at random.
1. Check what YouTube reports
- Open YouTube Studio → Go Live, then select the relevant stream in Live Control Room.
- Read the stream status, health indicator and any error message. YouTube says stream status includes specific errors and instructions; follow the message that appears for your stream rather than assuming every “Connecting” problem has the same cause. - Note whether YouTube receives a preview or reports a key, setup or connection problem. This helps distinguish a feed YouTube has received from one that has not reached its ingest service.
Keep the Live Control Room open while testing. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
2. Verify OBS’s YouTube connection settings
In OBS, open Settings → Stream and check the service, server and stream key against the stream you selected in Live Control Room. The exact server choices can depend on the selected service and configuration; use the current settings provided by YouTube and OBS rather than substituting an unrelated server address.
- Service: Confirm OBS is configured for YouTube, not another platform or a custom destination left over from an earlier setup.
- Server or stream URL: Check that it matches the selected YouTube configuration.
- Stream key: Confirm that OBS has the key for this stream. YouTube describes a stream key as password-like: do not publish it, send it in screenshots or share it with someone offering to troubleshoot.
If you reset or replace the key in YouTube, copy the new one into OBS; the old value will not become the new key automatically. YouTube’s stream-key guide explains its role. For certain third-party encoder startup errors, YouTube specifically advises getting a key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder; that is not a reason to reset a key in every case. 3. Confirm OBS is producing a healthy feed
A correct destination cannot help if OBS is not producing the intended output. Check that the encoder is active, your intended scene and sources appear in the preview, and the OBS status and log do not show an encoder or output error. If the local preview is wrong, fix the scene or source before changing network settings.
- Update OBS if you are running an outdated version, then retry the stream.
- Check the appearance and sound of the output. If quality is abnormal, YouTube suggests checking encoder health and CPU load, and using a local recording to help inspect the result.
- Distinguish an OBS-to-YouTube connection failure from a viewer’s playback buffering. They are different symptoms; OBS has a separate guide for stream buffering troubleshooting.
4. Test whether the upload connection can sustain the stream
Run an upload speed test and compare the stable upload capacity—not just a brief peak—with the bitrate you configured. If the connection cannot sustain that bitrate, lower it and test again. YouTube’s encoder settings guide provides recommended settings by codec, resolution and frame rate; choose the row that matches your output rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. YouTube also recommends choosing quality appropriate to your connection.

OBS’s connection guide suggests using about 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate, not as a guarantee that a stream will be stable. Actual throughput can vary, so leave headroom. OBS frames dropped or intermittent disconnections can indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server, but a persistent “Connecting” display is not proof of a network fault by itself. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP, in its encoder settings guidance. Use the protocol supported by your selected OBS and YouTube configuration; switching protocols without evidence is not a guaranteed fix.

5. Isolate local network interference
- Try Ethernet. If you are on Wi-Fi, test with a wired connection. This can reveal whether wireless instability is involved; it will not correct a bad stream key or incorrect service selection.
- Test without a VPN or network-prioritization utility. If the stream connects, re-enable tools one at a time to identify the interference rather than leaving a security or networking tool disabled without cause.
- Check firewall or antivirus interference carefully. If a controlled test identifies security software as the cause, add an OBS exception and turn protection back on. Do not leave protection disabled as a permanent workaround.
- Try another ingest server if one is available. Change only this setting, then test whether the result changes.
OBS documents Settings → Advanced → Network options for Windows, including network optimizations and TCP pacing, that some users report can help with disconnections. Treat them as targeted tests, not universal remedies. OBS suggests leaving Bind to IP at Default and trying IPv4-only as a test; if it does not help, restore IPv4/IPv6. Dynamic bitrate can reduce dropped frames by lowering quality when needed, but it trades away quality and does not repair the underlying connection issue.
6. Escalate only after narrowing the cause
If the OBS service, server and key are correct, the encoder is healthy, and connection tests still show instability, contact your internet service provider with the times and symptoms you observed. Avoid replacing router or network hardware before evidence points to a hardware fault; OBS advises speaking with the ISP if you are unsure before replacing equipment.
