Set the keyframe interval in the encoder that is sending your live stream to 2 seconds. If the setting uses frames rather than seconds, calculate the value from your output frame rate: at 30 fps, enter 60 frames. YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. If the warning persists, verify the live output settings and inspect YouTube’s stream health; a displayed setting alone does not prove the encoder is sending the expected interval.

What the keyframe interval warning means

YouTube’s live-stream error guidance says the encoder is sending keyframes either too often or not often enough. Its general encoder guidance recommends keyframes every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. The error guidance also distinguishes the symptoms: an interval that is too short can reduce image quality, while one that is too long can cause buffering. Read the specific warning and reported interval before changing other settings.

A keyframe interval may be specified in seconds or in frames. For a frame-based setting, multiply the output frame rate by the desired interval in seconds. For example, 30 frames per second × 2 seconds = 60 frames. If you change the output frame rate, recalculate the frame count.

Fix the interval in your streaming encoder

  1. Open the live-output settings. In the software sending the stream, open the streaming output or live encoder settings—not settings that apply only to local recordings.
  2. Find the keyframe or GOP control. Look for a setting named Keyframe Interval, Keyframe Frequency, or GOP interval. The precise label depends on the encoder and its version. OBS documents a keyframe interval setting; its NVENC guidance also describes frame-based intervals and the custom keyint option.
  3. Set the interval to 2 seconds. If the control is frame-based, use the active streaming output frame rate to work out the count. At 30 fps, set 60 frames.
  4. Choose Closed GOP if offered. If the encoder provides an Open/Closed GOP option, select Closed GOP while troubleshooting. YouTube says its pipeline requires Closed GOP for optimal transcoding.
  5. Test and monitor the stream. Start a test stream with representative audio and motion, then check YouTube’s stream health and messages. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.

OBS: check the streaming encoder, not just recording

OBS can have separate streaming and recording encoder controls. Changing a recording-only keyframe setting will not change what YouTube receives. Confirm that you edited the encoder used by the active stream. Available controls and labels vary with OBS version and encoder.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the warning returns

  • Confirm which output is active. Check that the stream is using the encoder profile you edited, including any per-stream or platform-specific overrides.
  • Match frames to the live frame rate. Determine whether the control is in seconds or frames, then compare its value with the actual output frame rate. A frame count that was correct before a frame-rate change may no longer represent 2 seconds.
  • Use the warning’s direction to guide diagnosis. Too-frequent keyframes, too-infrequent keyframes, and a small GOP are different reported conditions. Use YouTube’s specific message rather than changing unrelated settings.
  • Check whether the outgoing stream matches the interface. YouTube notes that ingest errors can cause incorrect GOP sizes. If the encoder shows 2 seconds but YouTube reports a different interval, investigate the emitted stream and ingest stability; the setting shown in the interface does not establish what reached YouTube.
  • Keep keyframes consistent. OBS notes that a consistent interval, without adaptive I-frames or scene cuts, helps YouTube’s automatic quality selector transition smoothly among transcoded versions.
  • Test again and watch stream health. The documented guidance does not identify one universal cause for a persistent warning, so inspect the active configuration and stream diagnostics before concluding that the encoder is defective.
