Spaces in filenames are allowed in an FFmpeg concat playlist when each path is quoted or escaped correctly. A YouTube stream going offline does not, by itself, prove that a space caused the outage. Check the playlist’s exact syntax and resolved file paths, then use FFmpeg’s log and YouTube Studio’s ingest status to identify where the failure occurs.
Check how the playlist quotes filenames
The concat demuxer reads a text script containing one file directive per line. For a filename containing spaces, a typical entry is:
file 'clip one.mp4'FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation says special characters and spaces in paths must be escaped with backslashes or enclosed in single quotes. Check the playlist as written, rather than assuming that spaces are forbidden.
- Make sure the opening and closing quote characters match.
- Check spelling, capitalization where relevant, and path separators.
- Confirm that relative paths resolve from the directory FFmpeg is using, and that each file exists there.
- Look for unexpected characters in the playlist, including a byte-order mark at the start of the file.
If you rely on automatic concat-script recognition, the optional header must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 on the very first line, with no extra space or byte-order mark. Otherwise, specify the concat demuxer explicitly in your command. The header rule is documented by FFmpeg; the playlist’s actual bytes and the working directory are important details to verify when diagnosing a particular run.

Use the log to locate the failure
A playlist parse or file-open error points toward the script syntax or path resolution. If FFmpeg opens the intended inputs and maps the expected streams, but later reports an output or network error, the filename spaces are less likely to explain the failure. This is a diagnostic distinction based on the documented parser behavior, not a finding about an unseen incident.
- Read from process start through exit. Note the first error, not just the final line. A later failure may be a consequence of an earlier one.
- Confirm every intended input opens. Check the log for each playlist entry and any missing-file or parsing errors.
- Check stream mapping. Verify FFmpeg selects the expected video and audio streams from the inputs.
- Check output progress and errors. Determine whether FFmpeg continues writing output or reports a muxing, output, or network problem.
- Compare with YouTube Studio. Check the stream’s ingest status and event details to see whether YouTube is receiving the feed or reporting an ingest issue.
Without the playlist, full command, FFmpeg build, relevant log, operating system, and YouTube Studio status, the cause of a specific stream interruption cannot be established.

Check compatibility and timestamps after quoting
Correct quoting does not guarantee that a sequence of files will make a clean continuous output. The concat demuxer adjusts timestamps so each next file begins after the previous one. FFmpeg warns that inaccurate durations can cause artifacts and that inputs must have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. If the playlist parses and all inputs open, compare those properties and inspect the log for timestamp or muxing errors.
These are relevant checks for malformed or discontinuous output; FFmpeg’s documentation does not say that such issues specifically cause YouTube to mark a broadcast offline. Nor does the available evidence establish a YouTube bug involving spaces in filenames.

Choose the concat method that fits the media
FFmpeg has three distinct concatenation approaches. They have different compatibility conditions, so changing methods is not a universal fix for a quoting mistake. The FFmpeg FAQ discusses when to use them.

For YouTube ingest settings, use YouTube’s own guidance for the specific stream setup; an unofficial example of sending a looped playlist to an RTMP destination is not authority for YouTube requirements.
