YouTube Live Stream Bitrate Settings for a Slideshow Playlist

For a 1080p YouTube slideshow, the recommended bitrate is 14 Mbps for H.264 at 30 fps or 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265. Match the encoder settings, leave upload headroom, and test the loop before going live.

For a typical 1080p slideshow streamed to YouTube Live, use the bitrate YouTube recommends for your encoder’s codec and frame rate: H.264 at 30 fps is 14 Mbps; H.264 at 60 fps is 17 Mbps. With AV1 or H.265/HEVC, the corresponding recommendations are 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps. These are general YouTube ingestion recommendations, not slideshow-specific targets. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably, leave the recommended 20% headroom, and test the full playlist—including transitions and audio, if any—before going live.

Choose a bitrate that matches the codec, resolution, and frame rate

YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrate depends on the video codec, resolution, and frame rate sent by your encoder. It does not publish a separate bitrate recommendation for still-image slideshows. Use the row matching your encoder’s actual output settings; the recommended value is a guideline, not a guarantee of stream quality. The figures below are from YouTube Help’s encoder settings guidance retrieved October 3, 2026; the page does not state a publication year. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 minimum AV1 or H.265 recommended H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
2160p (4K), 60 fps 10 Mbps 35 Mbps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
2160p (4K), 30 fps 8 Mbps 30 Mbps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
1440p, 60 fps 6 Mbps 24 Mbps 8 Mbps 34 Mbps
1440p, 30 fps 5 Mbps 15 Mbps 7 Mbps 21 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p, 30 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p, 30 fps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p, 30 fps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps

For mostly static slides, 30 fps is a sensible starting point; it is a practical suggestion, not a YouTube rule. Choose a higher frame rate if the stream includes motion that benefits from it, and match the output to what your encoder and connection can sustain. Raising bitrate does not automatically improve a static image.

What the bitrate does—and does not—mean

The table describes the bitrate YouTube receives from your encoder, not the playback bitrate each viewer will see. YouTube says it detects the incoming settings and transcodes the stream for different devices and network conditions. The codec must be supported by the encoder you use; YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video ingestion. If you are unsure which codec your encoder sends, check its output settings rather than choosing a row by guesswork.

Check your upload capacity before selecting the setting

Your outbound upload connection needs to carry the entire stream consistently. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the total bitrate; its guidance says the stream’s total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. For example, if the encoder sends one 14 Mbps stream, plan for at least 16.8 Mbps of stable available upload capacity after accounting for other devices and activity on the connection. That calculation applies to available capacity, not merely the headline speed advertised by your internet plan. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

  • Run an upload-speed test near the computer and network you will use for the broadcast.
  • Account for people, cloud backups, or other devices sharing the connection during the stream.
  • If you send both a primary and backup stream, include both bitrates in the capacity calculation before adding the 20% headroom.

If the connection is variable, select a lower resolution, frame rate, or codec/bitrate combination that fits its reliable capacity. A nominally higher setting is not useful if the upload repeatedly falls short.

Set the encoder for a stable YouTube Live stream

  1. Choose the output format. Set the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and codec to the combination you intend to stream. For a still-image program, start at 1080p and 30 fps if those settings fit your needs and connection.
  2. Set the matching bitrate. Select YouTube’s recommended value for that codec, resolution, and frame rate from the table. If your upload cannot reliably support it with headroom, step down to a suitable row rather than pushing the connection to its limit.
  3. Use CBR. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding for live ingestion.
  4. Set the keyframe interval. Use a 2-second keyframe frequency; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  5. Configure audio if the program includes it. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio. Check that the selected input is active and that its level is audible without clipping.
  6. Enter the stream key in the encoder. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast and copy its stream key into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it. The encoder sends the configured stream to YouTube, which detects the incoming settings.

YouTube describes an encoder as either a software application or standalone hardware. The OBS workflow below uses software; buying a hardware encoder is not a prerequisite. See YouTube’s guide to setting up a live stream encoder.

Loop the right kind of playlist in OBS

Choose the OBS source according to the material you want to rotate. For still images, use Image Slide Show. For a playlist of video or audio files, use VLC Video instead; VLC must be installed for that source to be available.

Source Best for Useful controls
Image Slide Show Still image files or directories Automatic or manual playback, transitions, slide timing, loop, and randomized playback
VLC Video A playlist of video or audio media files Loop and shuffle controls; requires VLC to be installed

Configure an image slideshow

  1. In OBS, add an Image Slide Show source to the scene that will go live.
  2. Choose individual image files or directories for the source’s slide list. Arrange the list in the order you want if playback should be sequential.
  3. Choose automatic or manual slide mode. For unattended continuous playback, use automatic mode.
  4. Set the transition and time between slides to suit the material. OBS documentation lists Fade as the default transition, 8,000 milliseconds between slides, and a 700-millisecond transition speed; these are defaults, not recommended durations for every program.
  5. Enable Loop so playback restarts after the last image. Choose whether to randomize playback or preserve the listed order.

OBS documents these slideshow controls in its Image Slide Show source guide, dated January 11, 2022.

Configure a media playlist

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS needs it for the VLC Video source.
  2. Add a VLC Video source and load the video or audio media files into its playlist.
  3. Set the playlist’s loop and shuffle behavior to match whether you want a repeating sequence or randomized playback.
  4. Preview the source to confirm that the media advances as expected and that any audio is routed correctly.

Use VLC Video for media files rather than treating it as the still-image slideshow source. OBS’s VLC Video source guide is dated January 11, 2022.

Test before the broadcast and monitor it while live

Test with the same encoder settings and content behavior planned for the real stream. YouTube specifically advises that the test include audio and movement similar to what the live program will contain. For a slideshow, let several transitions run; if there is music, narration, or other audio, test that too. Confirm that the loop returns to the start of the list and that no slide is unexpectedly cropped or blank.

  • Check that YouTube receives the stream and reports the expected resolution and frame rate.
  • Watch YouTube’s stream health messages during the test and event; investigate warnings rather than assuming viewers will not notice them.
  • Listen for missing, distorted, or unexpectedly loud audio.
  • Keep the encoder and network stable for the duration of the broadcast, and monitor the connection if other household or workplace traffic changes.

Troubleshoot common slideshow stream problems

YouTube reports poor stream health or the broadcast buffers

Likely cause: The available upload capacity is below the stream’s total bitrate, or the connection is fluctuating. Fix: Check actual upload capacity, reduce the encoder bitrate by selecting a lower suitable output setting, and preserve the 20% headroom YouTube recommends. Include a backup stream in the capacity calculation if one is running.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The stream looks poor even though the bitrate matches the table

Likely cause: The incoming codec, resolution, or frame rate may not match the row you used, or the connection may not sustain the target. Fix: Verify the encoder’s actual output settings, select the matching YouTube recommendation, and check stream health. The recommendations are not a promise of a particular appearance for every source or viewer.

The slideshow stops after the final image

Likely cause: Loop is disabled. Fix: Open the OBS Image Slide Show source settings and turn on Loop; preview the end of the sequence to confirm it restarts.

The playlist does not advance or a media source is unavailable

Likely cause: The source type does not fit the content, VLC is not installed for VLC Video, or playlist controls are not set as intended. Fix: Use Image Slide Show for still images; install VLC and use VLC Video for video or audio playlists, then check loop and shuffle settings.

Slides appear in the wrong order or repeat unpredictably

Likely cause: The listed order differs from the intended sequence, or randomized playback is enabled. Fix: Reorder the image list and disable randomization when a fixed sequence matters.
