“Excellent connection” does not rule out every cause of freezing. First find out whether OBS is dropping frames on the way to YouTube, struggling to render or encode locally, or sending a healthy stream that buffers only for some viewers. Each points to a different fix.
Identify where the freezing happens
Use OBS’s statistics and YouTube’s stream-health information rather than relying on one status label. OBS distinguishes connection trouble from local rendering or encoding overload; viewer buffering is a third possibility. The OBS guides cover these separately: connection troubleshooting, encoding performance troubleshooting, and stream buffering troubleshooting.
| What to check | What it indicates | Who may be affected |
|---|---|---|
| OBS dropped-frame counter | Frames are being lost on the connection to the ingest server, often because the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | The broadcast’s incoming stream can be affected. |
| OBS rendering or encoding lag indicators and messages | The computer or OBS cannot keep up with scene rendering or encoding. | The outgoing stream can be affected even if the network connection is sound. |
| YouTube stream health and reports from viewers | If OBS looks healthy but viewers report buffering, playback conditions at their devices or on their networks may be responsible. | It may affect particular viewers rather than everyone. |
OBS Project defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A reassuring connection label does not replace checking the relevant counters and stream-health evidence.
If OBS is dropping frames, troubleshoot the connection
- Check whether the configured bitrate is sustainable. OBS suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed as a heuristic. It is not a guarantee of sustained throughput; upload capacity can vary. OBS recommends checking upload speed and reducing bitrate if the connection cannot reliably support it. Read OBS’s connection guidance.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test with wired Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. This is a useful test for wireless instability, not a fix for local encoding overload, ISP route congestion, or a viewer’s own playback network.
- Try a different ingest server if one is available. A route to one server may behave differently from another.
- Check VPN, security, and network-optimization software. Investigate whether these are interfering with the stream connection.
- If the problem persists, check cables and network hardware, restart the modem or router, and contact your ISP as appropriate.
If OBS shows rendering or encoding lag, reduce local workload
When the connection counter is not the issue but OBS reports rendering or encoding overload, focus on the computer’s workload. OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes, so a healthy network does not resolve a local performance bottleneck.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Free up GPU capacity and, if you are gaming, limit the game’s frame rate.
- Simplify OBS scenes to reduce the work required to render them.
- If needed, lower output resolution or frame rate.
- On Windows, OBS suggests trying Run as administrator for GPU overload.
Make one change at a time, then check whether the lag indicators improve. See the OBS performance guide for its troubleshooting details.
If OBS is healthy but viewers still see freezing
Test playback on another device or network and ask whether the problem affects every viewer or only some. OBS notes that viewer devices and network conditions vary; buffering at a viewer’s end can occur even when the broadcaster is not dropping frames. Check YouTube’s stream health as well, but do not treat a smooth preview on your own device as proof that every viewer has the same conditions. See OBS’s buffering guide.

Check YouTube’s encoder settings and stream health
Choose a bitrate appropriate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate, and test with representative movement and audio before going live. YouTube Help recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. Its listed H.264 encoder recommendations include:
| H.264 format | YouTube recommended encoder bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrates for the listed formats, not measurements of your home upload speed or proof of the cause of freezing. They are different from OBS’s 75% starting heuristic, which relates the chosen bitrate to total upload speed. Consult YouTube’s encoder guidance for recommendations by format.

Common symptoms and next steps
- OBS dropped frames rise during the freeze: investigate sustainable bitrate, connection stability, Wi-Fi, ingest server, and network software.
- Rendering or encoding lag appears while dropped frames do not: reduce local GPU and scene load, then consider lowering resolution or frame rate.
- OBS appears healthy, but only some viewers report buffering: test playback from another device or network and review YouTube stream health.
- The status says excellent but the video still freezes: use the counters, performance messages, stream-health indicators, and viewer reports to locate the fault; the label alone does not identify it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube rather than troubleshoot an OBS broadcast, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
